By air, by road or by rail and road
Most travellers from the south and west of India fly. From Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal the road is often quicker door to door.
By air
Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu takes nearly all flights from India. Gautam Buddha International at Bhairahawa, 20 km from Lumbini, and Pokhara International have fewer international services. Airlines and schedules change, so check current status before you travel.
By road
The main crossings for travellers are Sonauli–Belahiya (for Lumbini, Pokhara and Kathmandu), Raxaul–Birgunj (for Chitwan and Kathmandu), Rupaidiha–Nepalgunj (for Bardia and the far west), Jogbani–Biratnagar and Panitanki–Kakarbhitta (for eastern Nepal), and Banbasa–Mahendranagar. Indian cars need a customs permit at the border.
By rail, then road
Apart from the short Jaynagar–Janakpur line, trains do not cross into Nepal. Take a train to a railhead near the border, such as Gorakhpur for Sonauli, Raxaul for Birgunj or New Jalpaiguri for Kakarbhitta, and we meet you with a car on the Nepal side.
Documents
What Indian citizens carry
Indian citizens do not need a visa for Nepal. Adults show a valid Indian passport or a Voter ID card at the border or the airport. Aadhaar and PAN cards are not accepted as travel documents. Children's rules depend on age. A Kailash yatra needs a passport.
