East of the Arun and Koshi rivers, Nepal narrows into a strip of hills between Sikkim, Darjeeling and Tibet. Kanchenjunga, at 8,586 m the third-highest mountain on earth, stands on the border with Sikkim, and Makalu, 8,485 m, rises above the Barun valley to the west. Below the snow lie Limbu and Rai villages, cardamom gullies, rhododendron ridges and, in Ilam district, the tea estates that started Nepal's tea industry in the 1860s. It is the least visited part of the country by foreign travellers and one of the easiest to reach from India.

For Indian families and pilgrims, the east is close. The Kakarbhitta border is about an hour from Siliguri, and Ilam's tea country begins two hours beyond it, so a 4 or 5-night trip covers Kanyam's open tea slopes, sunrise from Antu Danda at 2,328 m and the forest lake of Mai Pokhari. Pathibhara Devi, a goddess revered by Hindus and the Limbu community, has her shrine at 3,794 m above Phungling in Taplejung: a two-day drive and a 4–5 hour climb, or a short helicopter shuttle in clear morning weather.

To the west, in Khotang district, the limestone caves of Halesi Mahadev draw Shiva devotees, Buddhists who know them as Maratika, and Kirat Rai families who treat them as an ancestral site. Halesi is 9–10 hours by road from Kathmandu or about 45 minutes by helicopter. On the plains, Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is Nepal's main winter birding site and the last home of the wild water buffalo, while the Koshi Highway climbs from Dharan through Bhedetar to the old hill bazaars of Dhankuta and Hile.

Trekking here is remote and slower than in Everest or Annapurna. The Kanchenjunga circuit takes about 22 days from Kathmandu and needs a restricted area permit, a licensed guide and at least two trekkers; Makalu Base Camp takes about 18 days through Makalu Barun National Park. Lodges are simple and trails quiet. Our packages run from a 1-day Halesi helicopter yatra to the full Kanchenjunga trek, with prices in INR and USD and transport from Bhadrapur, Biratnagar or the border included.

Why go

What East Nepal does best

  • Pathibhara Devi above Phungling

The shrine of Pathibhara Devi sits on a ridge at 3,794 m in Taplejung, hung with bells and red cloth left by pilgrims. Most walk up from Kafle Pati in 4–5 hours before dawn for sunrise on Kanchenjunga; seniors take ponies or a helicopter shuttle from Phungling or Kanyam in clear morning weather.

  • Both base camps of Kanchenjunga

The Kanchenjunga circuit reaches Pangpema at 5,143 m below the north face, crosses the Sele La and Mirgin La passes, and ends at Oktang on the Yalung Glacier below the south-west face. It is a 22-day trek with restricted area permits and simple teahouses, and few other trekkers on the trail.

  • Ilam tea gardens and Antu Danda sunrise

Ilam's first tea estate was planted in the 1860s, and the slopes around Ilam Bazaar, Kanyam and Fikkal still produce Nepal's best-known orthodox teas. Walk the estates, taste first and second flush, visit Mai Pokhari lake at about 2,100 m and watch sunrise over the plains and Kanchenjunga from Antu Danda.

  • Halesi Mahadev cave temple

In the hills of Khotang, a domed limestone cave about 60 m across holds a natural Shiva lingam lit by a hole in the roof. Buddhists revere the same caves as Maratika, where Guru Rinpoche practised. Reach it in 9–10 hours by road from Kathmandu or a 45-minute helicopter flight for a same-day darshan.

  • Makalu and the Barun valley

The Makalu Base Camp trek climbs from rice terraces near Num at about 1,500 m over the Shipton La into the glacial Barun valley, ending at 4,870 m below Makalu's south face. It takes about 18 days from Kathmandu through Makalu Barun National Park, with basic lodges and long, steep stages.

  • Koshi Tappu birds and wild buffalo

Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve covers about 175 sq km of river islands, grassland and marsh on the Koshi floodplain. From November to March it holds tens of thousands of migratory ducks and waders, and it protects Nepal's last wild water buffalo. Two nights in a tented camp near the reserve suit birders and families.

Getting there

Most trips start with a flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur, about 50 minutes with several daily departures, for Ilam, Kanyam, Pathibhara and the Kanchenjunga trailhead. Biratnagar, about 40 minutes from Kathmandu, is the airport for Koshi Tappu, Dharan, Bhedetar and Dhankuta. Nepal Airlines has flown small aircraft from Kathmandu to Suketar airport above Phungling (Taplejung) a few days a week, about 55 minutes, but these flights carry few seats and are often cancelled. From India, Kakarbhitta faces Panitanki across the Mechi River, about an hour from Siliguri, New Jalpaiguri and Bagdogra airport; Jogbani faces Biratnagar for travellers from Bihar. By road from Kathmandu, Ilam is about 13–15 hours and Halesi 9–10 hours. Inside the region we use private cars and jeeps, as hill roads are slow and some close after monsoon rain. Check current status before you travel.

Permits

Ilam, Pathibhara Devi, Halesi and Koshi Tappu need no trekking permit; Koshi Tappu charges a reserve entry fee. The Kanchenjunga trek needs a restricted area permit, about US$20 per person per week for the first four weeks, issued only through a registered agency for groups of at least two foreigners with a licensed guide, plus a Kanchenjunga Conservation Area permit of about NPR 2,000–3,000. Indian nationals also need both. The standard Makalu Base Camp route needs a Makalu Barun National Park permit, about NPR 3,000 for foreigners and NPR 1,500 for SAARC nationals, and border villages further north need a restricted area permit. Check current status before you travel.

Routes

Questions about Kanchenjunga & the East

How do I reach Ilam from Siliguri?

Drive about an hour from Siliguri to the Panitanki–Kakarbhitta border, complete Nepal entry, then drive about 95 km and 3–3.5 hours to Ilam via Charali, Kanyam and Fikkal on the Mechi Highway. Indian citizens need a passport or voter ID. Shared jeeps and buses run from Kakarbhitta and Birtamod, but a private car is easier for families.

What is the best time to visit East Nepal?

October and November are best for clear skies, treks and the Pathibhara yatra. March and April are the second season, with rhododendrons and the first tea flush. December to February suits Ilam, Antu Danda and Koshi Tappu birding but is cold higher up. June to September is monsoon, with heavy rain and road closures.

How much does a Pathibhara Devi yatra cost?

Our 6-day road yatra from Kakarbhitta or Bhadrapur starts from about ₹26,000 per person for four sharing a jeep and two rooms, with nights in Ilam and Phungling and a spare weather day. The 3-day helicopter yatra from Kanyam starts from about ₹38,000 per person, twin sharing, including a shared heli seat.

Do I need a permit for the Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek?

Yes. You need a restricted area permit, about US$20 per person per week for the first four weeks, and a Kanchenjunga Conservation Area permit, about NPR 2,000–3,000. The restricted area permit is issued only through a registered agency, for at least two trekkers with a licensed guide. Indian nationals need both. Check current status before you travel.

Are there flights to Taplejung for Pathibhara?

Suketar airport near Phungling has had scheduled flights from Kathmandu a few days a week, about 55 minutes in a small aircraft with 13–15 seats, but cancellations are common and services have stopped and restarted many times. Bhadrapur, with several daily flights, is the reliable choice. Check current status before you travel.

How many days do I need for the Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek?

Plan about 22 days from Kathmandu to visit both the north base camp at Pangpema and Oktang on the south side, or 18–20 days for the north side only. Getting to the trailhead takes two days by flight and road, and the walk itself takes 14–16 days, including an acclimatisation day at Ghunsa.

Which is harder, Kanchenjunga or Makalu Base Camp?

Both are strenuous. Makalu is shorter, about 18 days, but climbs steeply from 500 m in the Arun valley and crosses the Shipton La early, with very basic lodges. Kanchenjunga is longer, about 22 days, reaches higher at 5,143 m and includes a three-pass day, but rises more gradually and needs restricted area permits.

How do I visit Halesi Mahadev from Kathmandu?

By road it is about 230 km and 9–10 hours via Dhulikhel, the BP Highway, Khurkot and Ghurmi, so plan at least four nights for a comfortable yatra; ours runs 5 days from ₹30,000. A helicopter flies there in about 45 minutes for a same-day darshan, from about ₹62,000 per seat with five sharing.

Can Indians visit East Nepal without a passport?

Yes, for most of the region. Indian citizens can enter at Kakarbhitta or Jogbani with a passport or voter ID and need no visa. Ilam, Pathibhara, Halesi and Koshi Tappu need no permit. The Kanchenjunga trek still requires restricted area and conservation permits through an agency. Children need a birth certificate or school ID.
