Three nights is enough to see the Kathmandu Valley properly. Day one covers Swayambhunath and Kathmandu Durbar Square, day two Pashupatinath and Boudhanath, and day three Bhaktapur, with an optional sunrise at Nagarkot. A 3-night package at a 3-star hotel usually costs ₹14,000–25,000 per person, twin sharing, with private transfers and a guide. Add the one-hour Everest mountain flight on any morning for a close look at the high Himalaya, or a helicopter tour if your budget allows. Delhi to Kathmandu takes about 1 hour 40 minutes, so a Friday-to-Monday trip is realistic.
With four or five nights, add Pokhara. The 25-minute flight from Kathmandu saves a 6–8 hour drive, leaving time for boating on Phewa Lake, sunrise at Sarangkot and tandem paragliding. A 4-night Kathmandu–Pokhara trip costs roughly ₹22,000–35,000 per person at 3-star, plus domestic flights. Chitwan suits a separate 2-night break from ₹12,000–20,000, or a stop between Pokhara and Kathmandu. For travellers near the Uttar Pradesh border, Lumbini and Pokhara can be reached by road from Sonauli in a long weekend.
Short breaks need tight logistics. Choose flights that land in Kathmandu by early afternoon, keep the last day light in case of flight delays, and avoid relying on Lukla or Jomsom flights, which are weather-dependent. Kathmandu traffic can turn a 10 km transfer into an hour. October to April is the best window for clear views; Dashain, Tihar and Diwali weeks fill hotels and raise rates, so book early. Indian citizens need no visa, which keeps last-minute trips simple; check current status before you travel.
How to choose
- Pick one or two bases only
On a short trip, every hotel change costs half a day. With three nights, stay in Kathmandu only; with four or five, split your time between Kathmandu and Pokhara or Chitwan. Save the three-centre circuit for six nights or more.
- Fly the long legs
The Kathmandu–Pokhara drive takes 6–8 hours, and the road to Chitwan 5–6 hours. On a short break, the 25-minute flights to Pokhara or Bharatpur buy back most of a day. Keep a buffer of a few hours before your international flight home.
- Use mornings for mountain views
Mountains are clearest from sunrise to about 10 am, especially from October to March. Schedule the Everest mountain flight, Sarangkot sunrise or Nagarkot views on your first or second morning, so you still have a backup morning if cloud hides the peaks.
- Book transfers in advance
Arriving at Tribhuvan International Airport with a pre-booked car and guide waiting saves time and stress, especially on a short trip. Ask us to arrange your pickup and to advise on SIM cards and currency, so you spend your first afternoon sightseeing rather than queueing.
