Lumbini, about 20 km from Bhairahawa near the Sonauli border, is where Queen Maya Devi gave birth to Siddhartha Gautama. The Maya Devi Temple protects the marker stone, beside the sacred pool and the pillar raised by Emperor Ashoka in about 249 BCE. North of the sacred garden, the monastic zone holds monasteries built by Buddhist communities from Thailand, Myanmar, Germany, China, Japan and elsewhere, linked by a long canal. Lumbini is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and two nights let you see it unhurried, by bicycle or electric rickshaw.
Around Lumbini lie the places of the Buddha's early life. Tilaurakot, about 27 km west, is identified by many archaeologists as the palace of King Suddhodana in ancient Kapilavastu. Ramagrama, east of Lumbini, holds an unopened relic stupa, and Devdaha is linked to Maya Devi's family. From Lumbini, Kushinagar in India, where the Buddha died, is about 170 km and 4–5 hours by road through Sonauli, while Bodh Gaya and Sarnath connect via Gorakhpur. Most Buddhist circuit groups spend 3–4 nights in Nepal within a 10–14 day India–Nepal itinerary.
Kathmandu has the other great Buddhist sites. Boudhanath, one of the largest stupas in South Asia, is ringed by Tibetan monasteries, and Swayambhunath watches the valley from its hilltop. Namo Buddha, about 40 km east near Dhulikhel, marks the legend of the prince who fed a starving tigress, with Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery above it. Kopan Monastery runs meditation courses, including its well-known November course. Pokhara's World Peace Pagoda and the monasteries of Mustang extend the route. October to March is the best season; Buddha Jayanti falls in April or May.
How to choose
- Link Nepal with India's sites
If Bodh Gaya, Sarnath and Kushinagar are on your list, enter Nepal at Sonauli and spend two nights in Lumbini, then either return to India or continue to Kathmandu. A full India–Nepal circuit takes 10–14 days; the Nepal section adds 3–5 days to it.
- Give Lumbini two nights
The sacred garden, the monastic zone, Tilaurakot and Ramagrama are spread out. One night allows a rushed visit; two nights let you see the Maya Devi Temple at dawn, cycle between monasteries and visit Kapilavastu without hurry. Simple and mid-range hotels sit near the main gate.
- Plan around the Terai heat
Lumbini lies low on the Terai plains and is very hot from April to June, often above 38 °C. October to March is far more comfortable, though December and January mornings bring dense fog that can delay flights into Bhairahawa. Visit the gardens early in the day.
- Add meditation or monastery stays
For a spiritual focus, add a meditation course at Kopan Monastery in Kathmandu or quiet days at Namo Buddha. Some monasteries in the Lumbini monastic zone also offer meditation sessions. Course dates and guest rules vary, so confirm well ahead and check current status before you travel.
