The road yatra to Pathibhara takes five or six nights and a 4–5 hour climb at altitude. This version cuts that to two nights with a helicopter. In the pilgrim seasons, operators run shared shuttles from Kanyam, two hours from the Kakarbhitta border, to a landing area near the summit, about half an hour's flight. From there a short, steep walk leads to the shrine. You are back at your hotel by lunchtime.
Helicopter flights depend on the morning weather. They usually fly from first light until cloud builds in late morning, and they carry fewer passengers at this altitude, so larger families may fly in two groups. Time at the top is limited, usually 30–45 minutes. Because you land at 3,794 m without acclimatising, anyone with heart or lung disease, uncontrolled blood pressure or pregnancy should not take this trip. The spare morning on day 3 can be used as a weather backup.

- Helicopter views over the Mechi and Tamor hills, Kanchenjunga on clear mornings

Day by day
-
DAY1
Kakarbhitta or Bhadrapur to Kanyam
We meet you at the Kakarbhitta border or Bhadrapur airport and drive up the Mechi Highway to the tea slopes of Kanyam, at about 1,650 m. After check-in, walk the open tea gardens in the afternoon light. In the evening your guide confirms the helicopter schedule, weighs luggage limits and gives a short briefing on what to expect at altitude and at the shrine.
-
DAY2
Helicopter darshan at Pathibhara
After an early breakfast we go to the helipad for the first sorties of the morning, when skies are clearest. The flight crosses the hills of Ilam and Panchthar towards the Tamor valley, with Kanchenjunga ahead on clear days. From the landing area near the summit, walk slowly up the final steps to the shrine for darshan and offerings, spending about 30–45 minutes at the top before the return flight. Afternoon free to rest.
-
DAY3
Antu Danda sunrise, return to border
If yesterday's flight went to plan, we drive in the dark to Antu Danda at 2,328 m for sunrise over the plains and the Kanchenjunga range. If weather cancelled the flight, this morning is used for the helicopter instead. After breakfast we drive down through Fikkal and Charali to the Kakarbhitta border or Bhadrapur airport, arriving around midday.

Questions about this trip
How much is the Pathibhara helicopter yatra?
This 3-day package starts from about ₹38,000 per person, twin sharing, with a shared helicopter seat from Kanyam, two nights' hotel, private car and guide. Seat fares change with fuel prices; we confirm the current rate when you book.
How long is the helicopter flight to Pathibhara?
From Kanyam about 30 minutes each way, depending on wind and the exact route. From Phungling the flight takes only a few minutes, and from Dharan about half an hour.
Does the helicopter land at the temple?
It lands at a landing area near the summit. From there you walk a short but steep section to the shrine. Take it slowly; you are at almost 3,800 m.
What if the helicopter cannot fly?
We use the day 3 morning as a backup. If both mornings are cloudy, shared seat fares are normally refunded by the operator as per their policy, and we can offer the road and walking route with extra nights at cost.
Is the heli yatra safe for senior citizens?
For healthy seniors, generally yes, and it is the most popular way for older devotees to visit. Flying straight to 3,794 m can cause breathlessness. People with heart or lung conditions should not fly; consult your doctor first.
Can children fly to Pathibhara?
Yes, children usually count as a full seat. Infants and toddlers are more vulnerable to altitude and cold at the summit, so we advise against taking children under about five.
How much luggage can I carry on the helicopter?
Only a small daypack with water, a warm layer and puja items. Main luggage stays at the hotel. Weight matters at altitude, so passengers and bags may be weighed before boarding.
Can we start the heli yatra from Siliguri?
Yes. Siliguri to the Kakarbhitta border is about an hour, and Kanyam is about 2 hours beyond. We collect you at the border on day 1 and drop you there on day 3, in time to reach Siliguri or Bagdogra by afternoon.
Is a private helicopter charter possible?
Yes, from Bhadrapur, Biratnagar or Kanyam for up to five passengers, subject to weight. It gives flexible timing and a slightly longer stay at the top. Price on request; it depends on flying hours and fuel.
