Many Lucknow travellers drive into Nepal rather than fly. The Sonauli crossing, reached via Gorakhpur on the highway or the expressways, opens the classic road circuit: Lumbini for the Buddha's birthplace, Pokhara for the lake and mountains, and optionally Kathmandu or Chitwan before returning. A 5–6 night road trip from the border, at 3-star with a private car, typically costs ₹25,000–40,000 per person. Families like breaking the drive with a night in Lumbini or the hill town of Tansen.
Rupaidiha, closer to Lucknow via Bahraich, leads to Nepalgunj and a different side of Nepal. From there, Bardia National Park, with good tiger tracking, is about 95 km away, and Nepalgunj airport is the starting point for flights to Simikot for the Kailash Mansarovar yatra and to Talcha for Rara Lake. For Kathmandu, most Lucknow travellers fly via Delhi or drive to Sonauli and fly from Bhairahawa. October to March is the most comfortable season for road trips.
Flying from Lucknow
Direct flights between Lucknow and Kathmandu have not been a regular feature, so most travellers connect via Delhi, where Air India, IndiGo and Nepal Airlines fly to Kathmandu, for a total journey of about 4–5 hours. An alternative is to drive to Sonauli, 6–7 hours, and fly Bhairahawa–Kathmandu in about 35 minutes with Buddha Air or Yeti Airlines, or to drive to Rupaidiha and fly Nepalgunj–Kathmandu in about an hour. Schedules change, so check current status before you travel.
By road from Lucknow
Rupaidiha–Nepalgunj is the closest crossing, about 180–190 km from Lucknow via Bahraich, roughly 4–5 hours, leading to Nepalgunj, Bardia National Park (95 km) and flights to Simikot. Sonauli–Belahiya is about 360 km via Gorakhpur, roughly 6–7 hours on the expressway and highway, and leads to Lumbini (30 km), Pokhara (185 km) and Kathmandu (280 km). Indian cars need a bhansar customs permit at the border, charged per day.
By train to the border
Lucknow has frequent trains to Gorakhpur, taking about 4.5–6 hours, and Gorakhpur is 95 km from the Sonauli border, with local trains on to Nautanwa, about 8 km from the crossing. For Rupaidiha, road travel from Lucknow is simpler than rail, as services on the Bahraich line towards Nepalgunj Road are limited.
Documents for Indian travellers
Indian citizens need no visa for Nepal. At Sonauli or Rupaidiha, carry a valid Indian passport or Voter ID card; there is no immigration stamp for Indians, but officials may check. Children under 15 should carry photo ID showing age, and 15–18 year olds without a passport a school principal's identity certificate. If you drive, carry your car's RC, insurance and driving licence for the bhansar permit. Check current status before you travel.
