The Everest helicopter tour is our most requested flight. It leaves Kathmandu around 6:30 am, refuels at Lukla (2,860 m), lands for 10–15 minutes at Kala Patthar (5,644 m) or near Everest Base Camp (5,364 m), then stops for breakfast at Hotel Everest View (3,880 m) facing Ama Dablam. The round trip takes 4–5 hours. From Pokhara, the Annapurna Base Camp flight reaches the glacier amphitheatre at 4,130 m in about 25 minutes. From Kathmandu, the Langtang valley (Kyanjin Gompa, 3,870 m) and the sacred lake of Gosaikunda (4,380 m) are each 30–45 minutes away, which suits travellers with a single free morning.
Pilgrim flights make up much of the rest. Muktinath (3,710 m) is about 25 minutes from Pokhara, and a shared seat usually costs ₹45,000–65,000 with around an hour on the ground for darshan. Pathibhara Devi in Taplejung and Halesi Mahadev in Khotang are often flown together from Kathmandu in one long day. Further west, Rara Lake (2,990 m) is a short hop from Nepalgunj, while Manaslu flights land at Samagaun (3,530 m) inside a restricted area. For Kailash, groups fly Nepalgunj to Simikot by plane, then shuttle by helicopter to Hilsa on the Tibet border in sorties of about 20 minutes each.
The Everest mountain flight is different: a plane such as a Beechcraft 1900 or ATR 72 flies for about an hour along the range from Kathmandu without landing, and every passenger gets a window. Helicopters land, so they follow stricter rules. Flights go early because cloud usually builds by 11 am. At high landings an AS350 B3 helicopter carries fewer people, so a group of five may land in two lifts. A shared seat is cheapest; a private charter of up to five seats (US$5,000–6,500 for Everest) fixes the timing and the landing plan. Heli landing rules change, so check current status before you travel.
How to choose a heli tour
- Shared seat or private charter
A shared seat suits couples and solo travellers on a budget: you fly with other passengers on a fixed morning slot. A charter costs more but suits families of four or five, pilgrims who need longer at a temple, and photographers who want to choose the landing and the light. We quote both for every route.
- Be honest about your health
Landing above 5,000 m means thin air within an hour of leaving Kathmandu. We advise against high landings for anyone with heart or lung conditions, uncontrolled blood pressure or pregnancy, and for infants. These travellers can still enjoy breakfast at Hotel Everest View (3,880 m) or take the mountain flight instead.
- Keep one spare morning
Mountain weather decides the schedule, not the clock. We plan every helicopter tour for the first clear slot after sunrise and ask you to keep the next morning free in case cloud, wind or a closed airstrip grounds the flight. Spring and autumn give the best odds; the monsoon months give the worst.
- Check weight and luggage limits
Helicopters carry less as they climb. Operators weigh passengers and bags, may cap individual weight and allow only a small day pack on most tours. On Kailash and Muktinath shuttles, heavier groups fly in extra rotations, so share accurate weights with us when you book. Rules vary by operator; check current status before you travel.
Before you fly
Four rules every heli tour follows
Mountain helicopters work to the weather, the thin air and your health. Knowing the rules before you book saves disappointment on the day.
- Weather decides
Flights leave early, usually soon after sunrise, because cloud tends to build over the high valleys by late morning. The pilot can delay, divert or cancel at any point for safety. In spring and autumn most mornings fly; in the monsoon many do not. Keep a spare day in Kathmandu or Pokhara.
- Payload drops with height
Thin air means less lift. A helicopter that takes five passengers out of Kathmandu may carry only two or three at a landing above 5,000 m, so groups land in two lifts or shuttle to a lower point. We ask each passenger's weight when we book, and bags are kept small.
- 10–15 minutes up high
You fly from about 1,400 m to over 5,000 m in under an hour, without time to acclimatise. Landings at Kala Patthar or near Everest Base Camp are usually kept to 10–15 minutes. Longer stops, such as breakfast at Hotel Everest View (3,880 m), happen lower down.
- Who should not fly high
Skip high landings if you have a heart or lung condition, uncontrolled blood pressure or a recent operation, or if you are pregnant. Babies and very young children are better kept to lower landings. Ask your doctor first; we can plan a lower route or a flight that does not land.
Landing rules, permits and operator policies change, especially inside national parks. Check current status before you travel; we confirm the rules for your date in the written quote.

Questions about heli tours
How much does an Everest helicopter tour cost from Kathmandu?
A shared seat on an Everest helicopter tour with a landing at Kala Patthar or near Base Camp usually costs US$1,100–1,400 per person. A private charter for up to five people costs about US$5,000–6,500 per helicopter. Most packages include the breakfast stop at Hotel Everest View, while national park and municipality fees may be extra. Prices move with fuel costs and season.
Is the Everest mountain flight the same as a helicopter tour?
No. The Everest mountain flight is a scheduled plane, usually a Beechcraft 1900 or ATR 72, that leaves Kathmandu at dawn, flies east along the Himalaya for about an hour and returns without landing. Foreign nationals usually pay around US$200–250. It costs a fraction of a helicopter tour and suits children, seniors and anyone who should not go to high altitude. Fares vary by airline and nationality.
Why can't all five passengers land at Kala Patthar together?
Thin air reduces lift, so a helicopter that carries five passengers out of Kathmandu can safely carry fewer at 5,644 m. Pilots often drop part of the group lower down, land the first group at altitude, then return for the rest, or land everyone at a lower point. The pilot makes the final call on the day, based on weight, wind and temperature.
What happens if bad weather cancels my helicopter flight?
We move you to the next clear morning, which is why we ask you to keep a spare day. If cloud closes in during the flight, the pilot may shorten the route, skip a landing or turn back. How a cancelled or shortened flight is refunded depends on the operator and the terms in your booking, so read them before you pay.
How long does the Muktinath helicopter tour from Pokhara take?
Allow about 3 hours from hotel to hotel. The flight from Pokhara to Muktinath takes around 25 minutes each way, sometimes with a short stop at Jomsom, and you get roughly an hour at the temple, which is a short, steep walk up from the landing area. Shared seats usually cost ₹45,000–65,000. Flights from Kathmandu take longer and cost more.
How does the Simikot to Hilsa helicopter work for Kailash?
Groups fly Nepalgunj to Simikot (2,910 m) on a small plane, then take a helicopter of about 20 minutes to Hilsa on the Tibet border and cross to Purang the same day. Helicopters shuttle four or five passengers at a time, so a group of twenty needs several rotations, all weather dependent. Kailash rules for Indian passport holders change; check current status before you travel.
