Varanasi travellers often see Nepal as the second half of a pilgrimage. Hindu pilgrims link Kashi Vishwanath with Pashupatinath in Kathmandu, and many add Manakamana and Muktinath. Buddhist groups travel from Sarnath to Kushinagar and on to Lumbini, the Buddha's birthplace, crossing at Sonauli. Kathmandu–Pokhara–Chitwan tours also work well from Varanasi, especially by flying to Kathmandu and returning overland via Lumbini and Sonauli, which avoids retracing your route and adds the Buddha's birthplace on the way home.
A typical 5–6 night trip flies from Varanasi to Kathmandu for two nights, drives or flies to Pokhara for two nights, then heads south to Lumbini for a night before crossing at Sonauli and returning to Varanasi by road, or by train from Gorakhpur. At 3-star, the Nepal portion costs about ₹28,000–45,000 per person, twin sharing. October to March is the most comfortable season; April to June is very hot in Lumbini and the Terai, often above 38 °C.
Flying from Varanasi
Buddha Air has operated direct Varanasi–Kathmandu flights of about an hour, landing at Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM), though frequency varies by season. Otherwise, connect via Delhi, where Air India, IndiGo and Nepal Airlines fly to Kathmandu, for a total of about 4–5 hours. Travellers heading only to Lumbini can drive to Sonauli instead and skip flying altogether. Schedules and airlines change, so check current status before you travel.
By road from Varanasi
Sonauli–Belahiya is the natural crossing, about 300–320 km from Varanasi via Gorakhpur, roughly 7–8 hours. From the border, Lumbini is 30 km, Pokhara 185 km and Kathmandu 280 km. Buddhist circuit groups often drive Varanasi–Kushinagar, about 250 km and 6–7 hours, then continue to Sonauli, about 150 km via Gorakhpur, the next day. Raxaul–Birgunj, roughly 400 km away, is an option for Chitwan.
By train to the border
Frequent trains link Varanasi with Gorakhpur in about 5–7 hours, and Gorakhpur is 95 km from the Sonauli border by road. Local trains run on from Gorakhpur to Nautanwa, about 8 km from the crossing. Trains to Raxaul via Chhapra and Muzaffarpur are also possible for the Birgunj border.
Documents for Indian travellers
Indian citizens need no visa for Nepal. For the flight to Kathmandu or the Sonauli crossing, adults must carry a valid Indian passport or Voter ID card; Aadhaar and PAN are not accepted. Children under 15 should carry photo ID showing age, and 15–18 year olds without a passport a school principal's certificate. Foreign Buddhist pilgrims travelling with Indian groups need a Nepal visa, available at Sonauli. Check current status before you travel.
