Private car 4.5–5 h
From Sauraha, drive west through Narayangarh, cross the Narayani at Gaindakot and follow the Mahendra Highway through Kawasoti, Sunwal and Butwal, where the hills meet the plain. Turn south to Bhairahawa and west to Lumbini. The road is flat and paved, and a car costs about ₹11,000–14,000 one way. It allows a stop at Barauli or Maula Kalika on the way.
Tourist bus 5–6 h
A few tourist buses run between Sauraha and Lumbini each morning, typically leaving around 9 am and reaching Lumbini in the early afternoon. Seats cost roughly NPR 1,000–1,500. They are comfortable and cheap but less flexible than a car, and some stop at Bhairahawa rather than Lumbini, so check the drop point.
Local bus 6–7 h
Local buses run frequently from Narayangarh to Butwal and Bhairahawa, where you change for Lumbini, about 22 km further. They are inexpensive but crowded, with many stops. Better for budget travellers with light luggage and time to spare.
