Road + walk 2 days
Day one is the drive north from Ilam on the Mechi Highway, about 70 km to Phidim in Panchthar and another 90 km on to Phungling, 7–8 hours in all with landslide repairs and lunch. Sleep in Phungling at 1,820 m. Next morning a jeep leaves around 2.30 a.m. for Kafle Pati, 1.5–2.5 hours, and the stone path climbs about 1,000 m in 5 km to the temple. Allow 4–5 hours up and 2–3 hours down.
Road + helicopter shuttle 7–8 h drive + a few minutes' flight
Drive to Phungling as above, then take a shared helicopter shuttle from Phungling to the landing area near the summit the next morning. The flight lasts only a few minutes and local seat rates have been about NPR 10,000 return. It suits seniors who can manage the long drive but not the climb. Flights run from first light until cloud builds, and payload limits mean groups may fly in two sorties.
Helicopter from Kanyam 1 h drive + 30 min flight each way
In the pilgrim seasons, operators run shared shuttles from Kanyam, about 30 km and 1 hour south of Ilam, to the landing area near the shrine in about 30 minutes. Seats have been quoted at about NPR 32,000–35,000 per person return. You land at almost 3,800 m without acclimatising, so anyone with heart or lung disease, uncontrolled blood pressure or pregnancy should not fly. Check current status before you travel.
Stops on the way
- Phidim
- Phungling (Taplejung)
- Suketar
- Kafle Pati
Keep a spare day in Phungling, because cloud or rain at the summit is common and the climb is safest when you are not racing the weather.
Questions travellers ask
How far is Pathibhara from Ilam?
About 185 km in total. Ilam to Phungling, the town below the shrine, is about 160 km and 7–8 hours on the Mechi Highway via Phidim. From Phungling a jeep reaches Kafle Pati in 1.5–2.5 hours, and the walk to the temple at 3,794 m takes 4–5 hours. Most pilgrims spend two nights in Phungling.
Can I visit Pathibhara from Ilam in one day?
Only by helicopter. Drive about an hour from Ilam to Kanyam, fly a shared shuttle of about 30 minutes to the landing area near the shrine, and return the same morning if the weather holds. By road and on foot it takes at least two days from Ilam, plus the return, so plan four or five nights.
What is the road like from Ilam to Taplejung?
The Mechi Highway between Ilam, Phidim and Phungling is paved for most of its length but narrow and winding, with landslide-prone sections after rain. A private jeep or SUV with a local driver is the safest choice. Allow 7–8 hours. In the monsoon, from June to September, closures of several hours or days are common.
Where should we stay before climbing Pathibhara?
Most pilgrims sleep in Phungling, where simple hotels give clean rooms, hot water and vegetarian meals, and leave at about 2.30 a.m. for Kafle Pati. Basic lodges at Kafle Pati itself cut the morning drive but are very simple and cold. Walkers using the old trail from Suketar often break the climb there.
