Private car or taxi 1–1.5 h
From Kathmandu the Araniko Highway runs past Koteshwor, Thimi and Bhaktapur, then climbs over the Sanga pass, where the large Kailashnath Mahadev statue stands beside the road, and drops to Banepa before reaching Dhulikhel at about 1,550 m. A one-way car costs roughly NPR 3,500 to 5,000; check current rates. Morning departures avoid the heavy traffic around Koteshwor and Suryabinayak.
Bus 1.5–2 h
Public buses and microbuses to Banepa and Dhulikhel leave regularly from Kathmandu's Ratna Park and Old Bus Park areas through the day. Fares are around NPR 100 to 150 one way. Buses stop often and can be packed at rush hour, but the route is simple, and the stop is close to Dhulikhel's old town and the hospital junction. Resorts on the hill are a short taxi ride from the stop.
On foot from Nagarkot 5–6 h
Walkers on our valley rim trek reach Dhulikhel from Nagarkot on village trails via Rohini Bhanjyang and Nala, descending from about 2,175 m to 1,550 m through pine forest and terraces. It is an easy but long day of 15 km or so, with good views of the Jugal Himal in the morning. A local guide helps, since trails branch frequently.

Stop at the Kailashnath Mahadev statue at Sanga for photographs on the way, and plan Panauti as a side trip once you reach Dhulikhel.
Questions travellers ask
How far is Dhulikhel from Kathmandu?
Dhulikhel is about 30 km east of central Kathmandu along the Araniko Highway. By private car the drive takes 1 to 1.5 hours depending on traffic between Koteshwor and Bhaktapur; by bus allow 1.5 to 2 hours. It is the easiest of the valley's hill towns to reach because the highway is wide and paved all the way.
Which is better for an overnight stay, Dhulikhel or Nagarkot?
Nagarkot is higher, around 2,175 m, and gives a broader mountain panorama at sunrise, but nights are colder. Dhulikhel, at about 1,550 m, is milder, has a Newar old town and links easily to Namobuddha and Panauti. Choose Nagarkot for views alone and Dhulikhel for views with culture and short walks.
Can I visit Dhulikhel and Namobuddha in one day from Kathmandu?
Yes. Drive to Dhulikhel in about 1.5 hours, continue 13 km by road to Namobuddha monastery, then return via Panauti. The full loop takes 8 to 9 hours with stops. If you want to walk the trail from Dhulikhel to Namobuddha, 3 to 4 hours one way, staying a night in Dhulikhel is more comfortable.
Is there a bus from Kathmandu to Dhulikhel?
Yes. Buses and microbuses to Banepa and Dhulikhel run frequently from Kathmandu's Ratna Park and Old Bus Park areas, roughly every 15 to 30 minutes in daytime. The fare is around NPR 100 to 150.
