Road + trek via Dhunche 3–4 days
Drive 6–7 hours to Dhunche (1,960 m), then walk 5–6 hours to Chandanbari (3,330 m) and 5–6 hours via Lauribina (3,910 m) to Gosaikunda. Pilgrims and older trekkers often add a night at Lauribina, making the ascent three walking days. The return takes one to two days. It is the main pilgrim route, busy at Janai Purnima.
Helicopter ≈ 35 min
A helicopter flies from Kathmandu to Gosaikunda in about 35 minutes and lands near the lake for a short stop of 20–40 minutes for darshan and puja. Flights run only in clear morning weather, and payload limits at 4,380 m may mean fewer passengers or two shuttles. Shared seats start around ₹58,000; check current rates.
Road + trek via Langtang Valley 9–10 days
Trekkers often reach Gosaikunda as part of a longer route: up the Langtang Valley to Kyanjin Gompa, then across via Thulo Syabru and Chandanbari to the lake. This gives much better acclimatisation. From Gosaikunda you can continue over Lauribina La (4,610 m) to Helambu.
Stops on the way
- Trishuli Bazaar (Bidur)
- Betrawati
- Dhunche
- Deurali
- Chandanbari (Sing Gompa)
- Cholang Pati
- Lauribina
Sleep at Lauribina the night before the lake if you can; it makes the final climb easier and the sunrise there is one of the best on the route.
Questions travellers ask
How many days to reach Gosaikunda from Kathmandu?
By road and on foot, the minimum is two days (drive to Dhunche, then a very long walk) but three days is more realistic and safer: drive to Dhunche, walk to Chandanbari, then walk to the lake. Many pilgrims take four, adding a night at Lauribina. By helicopter it takes about 35 minutes.
Can I go to Gosaikunda by car?
Not all the way. Roads reach Dhunche, and rough tracks continue some way up towards Deurali in the dry season, but the final ascent to the lake at 4,380 m is on foot or by helicopter only. Check current road status before you travel.
What is the cheapest way to reach Gosaikunda?
The cheapest way is a local bus from Kathmandu to Dhunche, about NPR 700–1,000, then walking to the lake with basic lodge stays. Foreigners need a licensed guide and park permits, which add cost. A guided group pilgrimage keeps the per-person price down.
Is the helicopter to Gosaikunda safe?
Helicopter tours to Gosaikunda are run by licensed operators with experienced mountain pilots, and flights only proceed in suitable weather. The main health risk is the sudden arrival at 4,380 m. Healthy passengers usually cope with a short stop, but people with heart or lung conditions or pregnancy should not fly without medical advice.
