Kathmandu to Halesi Mahadev and Maratika Caves

Halesi Mahadev is about 230 km east of Kathmandu, a 9–10 hour drive via Dhulikhel, the BP Highway, Khurkot and Ghurmi into the Khotang hills. A helicopter covers the distance in about 45 minutes, which makes a same-day darshan possible in clear morning weather.

  • ≈ 230 km
  • 1,400 m → 1,400 m

Private jeep 9–10 h

We leave Kathmandu at about 6 a.m., drive past Dhulikhel and down the BP Highway to the Sun Koshi, then follow the river road through Sindhuli district to Khurkot for breakfast. Beyond Ghurmi the road crosses into Khotang and climbs on narrower, rougher sections to Mahadevsthan, the village around the caves, at about 1,400 m. A jeep or SUV handles the hill section better than a car. We spend two nights at Halesi before driving back.

Bus 11–13 h

Public buses leave Kathmandu daily for Halesi and the Khotang hill towns, usually early in the morning or as overnight services. They are the cheapest option but slow, with frequent stops and limited legroom on rough sections above Ghurmi. Seats fill quickly before Shivaratri and Dashain, when pilgrims and returning families travel. Buy tickets a day ahead at the Kathmandu bus park, and carry water and snacks.

Helicopter ≈ 45 min each way

Charter and shared helicopters fly from Kathmandu's domestic terminal east over Kavre, Sindhuli and Okhaldhunga and land near Mahadevsthan. You get about 1.5–2 hours on the ground for puja, the side caves and the Maratika monasteries, and are back in the city by early afternoon. Our shared-seat yatra starts from about ₹62,000 per person with five sharing. Flights run in morning weather only, and total passenger weight is limited to about 400–450 kg.

Questions travellers ask

How far is Halesi Mahadev from Kathmandu?

About 230 km by road, which takes 9–10 hours by private jeep via Dhulikhel, the BP Highway, Khurkot and Ghurmi, and 11–13 hours by bus. By helicopter it is about 45 minutes each way, so you can complete darshan and return to Kathmandu the same day if the morning weather is clear.

How much is the helicopter from Kathmandu to Halesi?

Our 1-day Halesi helicopter yatra costs from about ₹62,000 or US$720 per seat when five passengers share one helicopter, including hotel transfers and a local guide. A private charter for up to five starts from about US$3,400 per helicopter. Prices move with fuel costs and operator rates, so we confirm when you book.

Is the road to Halesi good?

The BP Highway from Dhulikhel to Khurkot is paved and in fair condition. Beyond Ghurmi the road into Khotang is narrower, steeper and rough in places, and landslides can close it for hours after rain, especially from June to September. A jeep or SUV is better than a small car. Check current status before you travel.

Can we do Halesi from Kathmandu in one day by road?

Not comfortably. The drive takes 9–10 hours each way, so a same-day return would mean 20 hours in a vehicle with little time at the caves. Plan at least one night at Halesi, and ideally two, as in our 5-day road yatra from ₹30,000 per person. For a same-day visit, take the helicopter.
