Kathmandu to Ilam

Ilam is about 560 km from Kathmandu by road, 13–15 hours of driving. Most travellers fly 50 minutes to Bhadrapur instead and drive about 95 km and 3 hours up the Mechi Highway through the Kanyam tea gardens, arriving the same day.

  • ≈ 560 km
  • 1,400 m → 1,200 m

Flight + drive 50 min flight + 3 h drive

This is how we run most Ilam and Pathibhara trips. Several daily flights leave Kathmandu's domestic terminal for Bhadrapur in Jhapa, a 50-minute hop with Himalayan views on the left side on clear mornings. From Bhadrapur a private car takes you north through Birtamod to Charali, then up the Mechi Highway via Kanyam and Fikkal to Ilam Bazaar, about 95 km. Take the morning flight and you can stop at Kanyam and still reach Ilam by mid-afternoon.

Flight to Biratnagar + drive 40 min flight + 5–6 h drive

Biratnagar has more flights than Bhadrapur and is useful when Bhadrapur seats are sold out or when you combine Ilam with Koshi Tappu, Dharan or Bhedetar. The flight takes about 40 minutes. From the airport it is roughly 190 km to Ilam: east along the East–West Highway through Itahari and Damak to Birtamod and Charali, then up the Mechi Highway. Allow 5–6 hours with a lunch stop, longer on market days in the Terai towns.

Road 13–15 h

By private car or night bus, the usual route leaves Kathmandu via Dhulikhel and the BP Highway through Sindhuli to Bardibas, then runs east along the East–West Highway past Lahan, across the Koshi Barrage and through Itahari to Birtamod and Charali before climbing to Ilam. Night buses leave Kathmandu in the late afternoon and arrive early next morning. It saves the airfare but costs a full day, and we split the drive with a night at Itahari or Dharan for families.

Stops on the way

  • Bhadrapur airport
  • Birtamod
  • Charali
  • Kanyam tea garden
  • Fikkal
  • Itahari (road route)
  • Koshi Barrage (road route)

Book the earliest Bhadrapur flight, because afternoon cloud on the Mechi Highway makes the last hour of the drive slower and the Kanyam views poorer.

Questions travellers ask

How far is Ilam from Kathmandu?

About 560 km by road, which takes 13–15 hours via the BP Highway, the East–West Highway and the Mechi Highway. Flying is far quicker: 50 minutes from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur, then about 95 km and 3 hours by car to Ilam Bazaar. With a morning flight you can be in Ilam by early afternoon.

Which airport is nearest to Ilam?

Bhadrapur in Jhapa district, about 95 km and 3 hours by road, is the nearest airport with regular flights from Kathmandu. Biratnagar is a 5–6 hour drive. For travellers from India, Bagdogra airport near Siliguri is about 45 minutes from the Kakarbhitta border, and Ilam is roughly 3–3.5 hours beyond it.

Is there a direct bus from Kathmandu to Ilam?

Yes. Day and night buses run daily from Kathmandu to Ilam, taking about 13–15 hours depending on traffic and road works. They are cheap but long, with few comfortable stops. Families usually prefer to fly to Bhadrapur, or to drive in a private car with a night halt at Itahari or Dharan.

Can I visit Kanyam on the way from Bhadrapur to Ilam?

Yes. Kanyam lies on the Mechi Highway about 2 hours from Bhadrapur and an hour short of Ilam, so it is a natural stop. An hour among the tea slopes, with tea and snacks at the roadside stalls, adds little to the journey. Stop there on the way up if you arrive on a morning flight.
