Flight 25 min
Buddha Air and Shree Airlines fly Kathmandu–Janakpur in about 25 minutes, usually two to four times a day. Janakpur Airport is 2 km from the Janaki Mandir, so you can land and be at the temple within half an hour. It is the best option for seniors and short trips. Winter fog from mid-December to January can delay flights; afternoon departures are more reliable then.
Private car 7–8 h
The BP Highway leaves the Arniko Highway at Dhulikhel and winds through the Mahabharat hills via Sindhuli to Bardibas on the Terai, then east to Janakpur, about 230 km. The road is paved and scenic but has many bends, so take car-sickness precautions. A private car costs roughly ₹16,000–19,000 one way. Stop for lunch in Sindhuli.
Bus 8–10 h
Day and night buses run from Kathmandu to Janakpur via the BP Highway. Deluxe buses are reasonably comfortable and cheap; night buses save a hotel night but are tiring and not ideal for older travellers. Book through your hotel or the bus park and travel with minimal luggage.
Road via Narayangarh 10–11 h
The longer route goes via Mugling, Narayangarh and the Mahendra Highway east through Hetauda and Bardibas, about 380 km. It makes sense only if you are combining Janakpur with Chitwan or Devghat, as on our Devghat and Janakpur yatra.
Stops on the way
- Dhulikhel viewpoint
- Sindhuli Gadhi fort
- Sindhuli Bazaar for lunch
- Bardibas junction
- Dhanusadham (short detour)
Fly one way and drive the other: the flight saves a day, and the BP Highway shows the Mahabharat hills and Terai villages you would otherwise miss.
