Kathmandu to Kyirong (Gyirong)

Kathmandu to Kyirong is about 165 km by road via Trishuli, Dhunche, Syabrubesi and the Rasuwagadhi border, normally 7–9 hours plus 2–4 hours of formalities. The crossing was destroyed by a flood on 26 August 2026; check current status before you travel.

  • ≈ 165 km
  • 1,400 m → 2,700 m

Private jeep or coach 7–9 h + border

The usual way for yatra groups. A private vehicle leaves Kathmandu before dawn, follows the Trishuli valley to Betrawati, climbs to Dhunche and drops to Syabrubesi, then runs about 16 km to Rasuwagadhi. Many groups overnight in Syabrubesi to reach the border when it opens. After Chinese immigration, the Tibetan agency's vehicle covers the 25 km to Kyirong town. Expect landslides from late June to early September.

Road in two days 2 days

Our standard yatra plan: day one Kathmandu to Syabrubesi (≈ 122 km, 7–8 h), with tea stops and a night at about 1,460 m; day two to the border and Kyirong (≈ 41 km plus formalities). It spreads the long drive, absorbs delays on the narrow road and lets the group cross early in the day, when queues are shorter.

Helicopter + road ≈ 40 min flight + 2 h + border

A charter helicopter can fly from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi or a nearby helipad on the Nepal side in about 30–40 minutes when permitted, avoiding the worst of the road. You still drive to Rasuwagadhi and cross on foot. It is rarely used and depends on weather and landing permissions; we quote it on request. Floods in 2026 also damaged helipads in the Timure area.

Questions travellers ask

How far is Kyirong from Kathmandu?

About 165 km by road: some 122 km from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi, about 16 km to the Rasuwagadhi border and roughly 25 km on the Tibetan side to Kyirong town. It takes 7–9 hours of driving plus 2–4 hours at the border, so most groups break the trip in Syabrubesi.

Is the Kathmandu–Kyirong road open?

The Rasuwagadhi crossing reopened on 1 January 2026 after a July 2025 flood, then a larger flood on 26 August 2026 destroyed the border post, bridge and customs area. No reopening date had been announced by autumn 2026. Check current status before you travel; Kailash groups are rerouted via Simikot or Lhasa meanwhile.

Can I travel from Kathmandu to Kyirong independently?

You can reach the Nepal side by public bus to Syabrubesi, but foreigners and Indian pilgrims may only enter Tibet on a group visa and permit with a licensed Tibetan agency, whose guide meets you at the border. Independent travel beyond the bridge is not allowed.

What is the best time to drive from Kathmandu to Kyirong?

May, early June, September and October, when the road is dry. From late June to early September monsoon rain triggers landslides and floods on both sides of the border, as the 2025 and 2026 disasters showed, and delays of a day or more are common.
