Private jeep 8–9 h
The easiest option and the one we use on our treks. A 4WD jeep with driver collects you from your Kathmandu hotel around 6:30 am and drives via Nagdhunga and the Prithvi Highway to the Dhading Besi road, then to Arughat and up the Budhi Gandaki on a dirt track through Soti Khola to Machha Khola. A jeep seats up to six trekkers with bags and costs roughly NPR 30,000 to 40,000 one way, depending on season and road conditions.
Bus + shared jeep 9–11 h
Local buses leave Kathmandu's Machhapokhari or Gongabu area early in the morning for Arughat or Soti Khola, taking about 7 to 9 hours. From there shared jeeps run to Machha Khola when the track is open, about 1 to 2 hours more. It is much cheaper, roughly NPR 1,000 to 2,000 per person in total, but slower, crowded and less reliable, and you may need to overnight in Soti Khola.
Jeep + walk from Soti Khola Jeep 7–8 h + walk 6–7 h
When landslides block the last section, or if you want a gentler start, drive to Soti Khola (710 m) and walk to Machha Khola the next day. The trail runs about 15 km through sal forest and Gurung villages such as Labubesi, with some steep climbs. This was the classic first trekking day before the road reached Machha Khola, and it adds a day to the itinerary.
Stops on the way
- Nagdhunga pass on the Kathmandu valley rim
- Dhading Besi, district headquarters and lunch stop
- Arughat on the Budhi Gandaki
- Soti Khola, the former trailhead
Start early, keep motion-sickness tablets and a dust scarf handy, and check road status in the monsoon, when slides often close the Arughat to Machha Khola section.
Questions travellers ask
How far is Machha Khola from Kathmandu?
About 160 km by road via Dhading Besi and Arughat. The first half is paved and quick; the second half, after Arughat, is a rough dirt track along the Budhi Gandaki. A private jeep takes 8 to 9 hours, and buses with a change of vehicle take 9 to 11 hours.
Is there a direct bus from Kathmandu to Machha Khola?
Some seasonal buses and jeeps run through to Machha Khola in the dry months, but most public transport goes to Arughat or Soti Khola, where you change to a shared jeep. Services change with road conditions, so ask locally the day before. Most trekking agencies use private jeeps.
How much does a jeep to Machha Khola cost?
A private jeep from Kathmandu to Machha Khola typically costs about NPR 30,000 to 40,000 one way for up to six people, depending on season, fuel prices and road conditions. A shared jeep seat from Arughat or Soti Khola costs far less. Our trek packages include the private jeep.
Is the road to Machha Khola safe?
It is a typical Nepali mountain road: narrow, unpaved after Arughat and exposed to landslides in the monsoon. Experienced local drivers handle it daily. Travel in daylight, avoid the road during heavy rain and follow your driver's advice if a section is closed. Check current status before you travel.
