Private car or taxi 1–1.5 h
The usual route leaves Kathmandu along the Araniko Highway, turns off at Bhaktapur and climbs through Changu and Telkot to the Nagarkot ridge. Outside rush hour it takes about 1 hour 15 minutes from Thamel. A one-way private car costs roughly NPR 3,500 to 5,000, more for an SUV; check current rates. Many of our itineraries add Bhaktapur Durbar Square on the way and reach Nagarkot in time for sunset.
Local bus 2–2.5 h
Buses from Kathmandu's Ratna Park or Old Bus Park go to Bhaktapur's Kamal Binayak stop in about an hour, and from there a local bus climbs to Nagarkot in another hour or so. Fares are low, around NPR 100 to 200 in total, but buses are crowded, timings are loose and luggage space is limited. This suits backpackers with light bags rather than families.
On foot from Changunarayan 4–5 h
A popular hike links Changunarayan temple (1,541 m) and Nagarkot (2,175 m) along village trails and the Telkot ridge, gaining about 650 m. Most walkers drive to Changunarayan first, about 45 minutes from Kathmandu, and walk uphill to Nagarkot through terraced fields and small Tamang and Newar settlements. Take water, sun protection and a guide or offline map, as paths branch often.
Stops on the way
- Bhaktapur Durbar Square and Taumadhi Square
- Changunarayan temple
- Telkot village viewpoint
- Kamal Binayak bus stop in Bhaktapur
Leave Kathmandu by 2 pm in October and November so you reach the ridge before the sunset light fades around 5.30 pm.
Questions travellers ask
How long does it take to reach Nagarkot from Kathmandu?
By private car it takes about 1 to 1.5 hours for the 32 km from central Kathmandu, depending on traffic through Bhaktapur. Local buses take 2 to 2.5 hours with a change in Bhaktapur. The road is paved but narrow and winding in the last 10 km, so drivers keep speeds low. Leaving early afternoon gives time for sunset.
What is the taxi fare from Kathmandu to Nagarkot?
A one-way taxi or private car usually costs around NPR 3,500 to 5,000 from Thamel, and a return trip with the car waiting overnight or for sunrise costs more. Prices rise during Dashain and Tihar. Agree the fare before you set off, and check current rates before you travel; our packages include private transfers.
Can I do Nagarkot as a day trip from Kathmandu?
Yes. A day trip works well for sunset, with a drive out after lunch and a return by around 8 pm. Sunrise is harder as a day trip because you would leave Kathmandu around 4 am. For the best mountain views we recommend one night at Nagarkot so you are on the ridge at dawn, when skies are clearest.
Is the road to Nagarkot safe in monsoon?
The road is paved and generally stays open, but from June to September rain can cause small landslides and slippery bends on the upper section, and cloud often hides the mountains. Drive in daylight with an experienced local driver, allow extra time, and check current status before you travel after very heavy rain.
