Kathmandu to Syabrubesi

Syabrubesi, the Langtang trek road-head, is about 122 km north of Kathmandu via Trishuli Bazaar and Dhunche. Local buses take 7–8 hours, shared jeeps about 7 hours and private jeeps 6–7 hours. There is no airport, and the last 50 km is a narrow mountain road.

  • ≈ 122 km
  • 1,400 m → 1,460 m

Private jeep 6–7 h

The most comfortable and flexible option. A private jeep or 4WD seats up to five or six passengers with luggage and leaves from your hotel at a time you choose, ideally 7 am. Drivers stop for tea, lunch and photos. Expect to pay roughly NPR 15,000–20,000 one way for the vehicle, more in festival season. This is what our packages use, as it avoids early bus-park starts and lets you stop when needed.

Shared jeep ≈ 7 h

Shared jeeps run from the Machhapokhari and Gongabu area in the morning and fill seat by seat, usually with locals and trekkers. They are faster than buses and cheaper than a private vehicle, at roughly NPR 1,500–2,500 per seat, but space is tight and luggage goes on the roof. Departure times depend on when the jeep fills. Check current fares before you travel.

Local bus 7–8 h

Public buses leave from the Machhapokhari and Gongabu area between about 6:30 and 8 am. They are cheap, around NPR 800–1,200, but slow and crowded, with frequent stops for passengers and goods. Bags go on the roof under a tarpaulin. Buy tickets the day before. It is a genuine local experience, though tiring, and some trekkers feel travel-sick on the winding road above Betrawati.

Helicopter ≈ 30 min

Charter helicopters can fly from Kathmandu to the Syabrubesi area in about 30 minutes, but this is rarely used for the start of a trek because cost is high and acclimatisation is no benefit at 1,460 m. It is mainly an option for emergencies, tight schedules at the end of a trek, or combining with a Kyanjin Gompa landing.

Stops on the way

Questions travellers ask

How long is the drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi?

About 6–7 hours by private jeep and 7–8 hours by local bus for roughly 122 km. Traffic leaving Kathmandu, road works and landslides above Betrawati can add hours, especially in the monsoon from June to September. Start early so you are off the mountain road before dark.

Is the road to Syabrubesi safe?

The road is paved in parts and rough in others, with narrow sections, steep drops and landslide-prone stretches above Betrawati. Experienced drivers travel it daily. Safety improves with a private jeep, daytime travel and avoiding heavy monsoon rain. Ask your agency to check conditions the evening before.

Where does the bus to Syabrubesi leave from in Kathmandu?

Buses and shared jeeps to Syabrubesi leave from the Machhapokhari and Gongabu (New Bus Park) area on the Ring Road in north Kathmandu, mostly between 6:30 and 8 am. Taxis from Thamel take 15–20 minutes. Departure points and times change, so check current status before you travel.

Can I go from Syabrubesi to Kerung in Tibet?

The road continues about 15 km north from Syabrubesi to Rasuwagadhi, the border crossing to Kyirong county in Tibet. Only travellers with a Chinese visa and Tibet permits arranged by an authorised agency can cross, mainly on Kailash overland yatras via Kerung. Check current status before you travel.
