Road via Saga (2 days) 5–6 h + 8–9 h
The standard plan: Kyirong to Saga (≈ 250 km) past Gyirong county town and Pelku Tso, with Shishapangma to the south, then Saga to Manasarovar (≈ 480 km) via Zhongba, Paryang and the Mayum La at roughly 5,200 m. Roads are paved and vehicles comfortable, but the second day is long and the altitude jump to Saga is large.
Road in 3 days via Paryang 5–6 h + 4–5 h + 4–5 h
Adding a night at Paryang, a small roadside settlement on the high grassland between Zhongba and the Mayum La, halves the longest day and gives an extra night of acclimatisation before the lake. Guesthouses at Paryang are basic. We use this pattern for slower groups when permits allow.
Road with 2 nights in Saga 3 days
Our senior pilgrims' yatra spends two nights at Saga, at about 4,640 m, before the long drive west. The rest day reduces fatigue and the risk of altitude sickness at Manasarovar and on the parikrama. It adds a day but makes the journey kinder for older travellers.
Stops on the way
- Gyirong county town
- Pelku Tso
- Saga
- Zhongba
- Paryang
- Mayum La
Drink 3–4 litres of water on each driving day and keep a warm layer in the vehicle; the road crosses passes above 5,000 m.
Questions travellers ask
How long is the drive from Kyirong to Manasarovar?
About 730 km, usually driven in two days: Kyirong to Saga in 5–6 hours, then Saga to Manasarovar in 8–9 hours. Slower itineraries add a night at Paryang or a rest day in Saga. All sections are paved, with checkpoints where the guide shows permits.
What is the highest point between Kyirong and Manasarovar?
The Mayum La, at roughly 5,200 m, between Paryang and the lake. Passes on the Kyirong–Saga section also exceed 5,000 m. You stay only briefly at these points, but headaches can begin on the drive; tell your guide if symptoms appear.
Why do Kailash groups stop in Saga?
Saga is the only sizeable town between Kyirong and the lake, with heated hotels and restaurants, and it splits the 730 km journey roughly in thirds. It is also the first high night at about 4,640 m, so guides check oxygen levels there before continuing.
Can I see Mount Kailash on the drive from Saga?
On clear days, Kailash appears on the north-western horizon in the last stretch before Manasarovar, after the Mayum La, with Gurla Mandhata closer on the left. Most pilgrims first see it properly from the lakeshore that afternoon.
