Best Time for the Langtang Trek, Month by Month

By Best Nepal Tour Package Travel Desk

The short answer

Langtang has two main trekking seasons, the same as most of the Nepal Himalaya. Autumn, from late September to November, brings the clearest skies after the monsoon washes the air clean, with mild days and cold nights. Spring, from March to May, is warmer and greener, with rhododendrons flowering in the forests below Langtang village and Chandanbari, though afternoon cloud and haze are more common.

Winter, from December to February, is cold at altitude but often very clear, and the trails are quiet. It suits the Langtang Valley, Helambu and the Tamang Heritage Trail, but snow can make Gosaikunda and Lauribina La difficult. The monsoon, from June to September, is the least suitable time, with daily rain, cloud, leeches and landslides on the road from Kathmandu.

Month-by-month at a glance

The table gives typical conditions at Kyanjin Gompa (3,870 m), the highest overnight on the Langtang Valley trek. Lower villages such as Syabrubesi (1,460 m) are 10–15 °C warmer. Weather varies year to year, so treat these as averages.

Autumn: October and November

Autumn is the peak season for good reason. After the monsoon ends in late September, the air is clean and the views from Kyanjin Ri, Lauribina and Chisapani are at their sharpest. Days at Kyanjin are pleasant for walking, around 9–14 °C in October, though nights fall below freezing. By late November, nights reach −8 °C or lower, but skies stay clear and crowds thin.

October is the busiest month, with lodges at Kyanjin and Langtang village filling up and Nepal's biggest festivals, Dashain and Tihar, falling in October or early November. During Dashain, transport out of Kathmandu is crowded and some lodge staff go home, so book early. Late October and November are our favourite weeks for photography.

Spring: March to May

Spring is the second-best season and the warmest time to trek. Rhododendrons flower from March at lower levels and through April higher up, turning the forests around Lama Hotel, Langtang village and Chandanbari red, pink and white. Days are longer and warmer, and nights at Kyanjin are only just below freezing by May. This is also the best time for Yala Peak, with stable snow on the upper slopes.

The trade-off is visibility. Haze from dust and farm fires builds through April and May, and afternoon clouds often hide the peaks after 10 or 11 am. Start early each day to make the most of clear mornings. Pre-monsoon showers become more frequent in late May.

Winter: December to February

Winter is cold but rewarding. Skies are usually clear, trails are quiet and lodges have plenty of space. The Langtang Valley stays open, though Kyanjin Gompa nights fall to −10 °C or below, and snow can cover the trail above Langtang village for days after a storm. Some lodges at Kyanjin may close for part of January and February. Helambu and the Tamang Heritage Trail, which stay below about 3,700 m, are excellent winter treks, and January or February may coincide with Sonam Lhosar in Tamang villages.

Gosaikunda is a different story. The lake freezes, the trail above Chandanbari is often snowbound, and Lauribina La towards Helambu can be impassable from December to March. Winter trips to Gosaikunda need an experienced guide, good gear and flexibility.

  • Bring a sleeping bag rated to −15 °C for Kyanjin in winter
  • Carry microspikes for icy trail sections
  • Expect shorter daylight, around 10.5 hours in December
  • Check that lodges at Kyanjin and Gosaikunda are open before setting out

Monsoon: June to September

The monsoon brings rain most days, thick cloud that hides the mountains, slippery trails and leeches in the forest below 3,000 m. The road from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi and Dhunche suffers landslides that can close it for hours or days. We do not recommend the Langtang Valley, Helambu or Tamang Heritage Trail treks in this season, and helicopter tours are frequently cancelled.

The exception is pilgrimage. Janai Purnima, the August full moon, draws thousands of pilgrims to Gosaikunda despite the rain. If you go, travel with an experienced crew, carry rain gear and leech socks, and allow spare days. The upper valley around Kyanjin tends to get less rain than the forest lower down, but you still have to get through the wet lower valley and the landslide-prone road.

Festivals and events through the year

Timing a trek around a festival adds a great deal, but it also affects transport and lodge availability. Sonam Lhosar, the Tamang New Year, falls in late January or February and is celebrated with music, dancing and family feasts in villages such as Gatlang, Thuman and Briddim. Buddha Jayanti, the Buddha's birthday, falls on the full moon of April or May and is marked at gompas across the region, including Kyanjin.

Janai Purnima, the full moon of Shrawan in August, brings thousands of pilgrims to Gosaikunda, with jhankri shamans dancing through the night. Dashain, Nepal's biggest festival, usually falls in late September or October, followed by Tihar a few weeks later. During these two festivals, buses out of Kathmandu are packed, some lodges run on reduced staff, and prices for private jeeps rise. Book transport and rooms early if you travel at these times, and expect a festive atmosphere in the villages.

  • Sonam Lhosar: late January to mid-February
  • Buddha Jayanti: April or May full moon
  • Janai Purnima at Gosaikunda: August full moon
  • Dashain and Tihar: late September to early November

Best time by trek

Different routes suit different months. For the Langtang Valley trek, choose October–November or March–May, with December–February as a quiet, cold alternative. For Gosaikunda, choose April–May or October–November for trekking, or August for the festival. For Helambu and Chisapani, October–April is ideal, including midwinter. For the Tamang Heritage Trail, choose October–December or February–April. For Yala Peak, April–May and October–November give the best summit chances. For helicopter tours, October–December and March–April offer the most reliable flying weather.

Questions travellers ask

What is the best month for the Langtang trek?

October is the best single month, with the clearest skies and stable weather after the monsoon. November is nearly as good, colder but quieter. April is the best spring month, with rhododendrons in flower. Avoid June to August, when monsoon rain and landslides make the trek unpleasant.

Can I do the Langtang trek in winter?

Yes. The Langtang Valley trek is possible from December to February, with clear skies and quiet trails. Nights at Kyanjin Gompa fall to −10 °C or lower, and snow can affect the upper trail. Bring a warm sleeping bag and down jacket, and check lodges are open.

Is Langtang trek possible in the monsoon?

It is possible but not recommended. From June to September expect daily rain, cloud hiding the mountains, leeches in the forest and landslides on the road from Kathmandu. If you must go, allow spare days and travel with an experienced guide. Pilgrims still visit Gosaikunda for Janai Purnima in August.

When do rhododendrons bloom in Langtang?

Rhododendrons flower from March at lower levels around Syabrubesi and Bamboo, peaking in April around Lama Hotel, Langtang village and Chandanbari. Higher species flower into early May. The forests on the Gosaikunda trail are especially colourful in April.

How cold is Kyanjin Gompa in November?

In November, daytime temperatures at Kyanjin Gompa are about 6–11 °C in sun, falling to −8 to −4 °C at night, colder by late November. Wind can make it feel colder. Bring a sleeping bag rated to −10 °C or lower, a down jacket, warm hat and gloves.

Is Langtang crowded in October?

October is the busiest month, but Langtang is still far quieter than Everest or Annapurna. Lodges at Kyanjin Gompa and Langtang village can fill, so book through an agency. Trekking in late October or November, or in spring, gives more space.

When is the best time to visit Gosaikunda?

For trekking, April–May and October–November offer clear weather and open trails. For the Janai Purnima festival, go in August, accepting monsoon rain and crowds. Avoid December to February unless experienced, as snow covers the trail and the lake freezes.

Is February a good time for Langtang?

February can be a good time for the Langtang Valley, Helambu and Tamang Heritage Trail, with clear skies and very few trekkers. It is cold, with snow possible above Langtang village. Sonam Lhosar may fall in late January or February, a chance to see Tamang New Year celebrations.

When is the best time for a Langtang helicopter tour?

October to December and March to April give the most reliable flying weather, with clear mornings. January and February are often clear but cold. May brings haze, and the monsoon from June to September causes frequent cancellations. Always fly early in the morning.
