Most groups reach Khopra in the early afternoon, drop their bags and climb ten minutes above the lodge to a small knoll with prayer flags. From here the whole western horizon opens: Dhaulagiri I in the centre, its satellites II to VI stepping away to the left, and Tukuche Peak and the Dhampus Pass area to the right. Between you and them the Kali Gandaki has cut one of the deepest gorges on Earth.
In October and November the sun sets around 5:30 pm, and the show starts about 45 minutes before. The snow goes from white to cream, then to deep gold, and finally a short pink glow lingers on the summit after the valley has gone dark. Turn around and Annapurna South, behind you, turns orange too. Bring a warm jacket, as temperatures drop below freezing within minutes of the sun leaving the ridge.
Photographers should use a tripod and a telephoto lens of 100–300 mm to isolate the Dhaulagiri summit, and a wider lens for the panorama with the lodge and prayer flags in the foreground. Clouds rising from the Kali Gandaki often add drama, but they can also hide the peak entirely, which is why we always plan two nights on the ridge. Batteries drain fast in the cold, so keep a spare in an inside pocket and swap it in just before the light peaks.

Questions travellers ask
Is the view from Khopra better than Poon Hill?
For Dhaulagiri, yes. Khopra is 450 m higher and closer to both Dhaulagiri and Annapurna South, and you watch sunset and sunrise from your lodge instead of joining hundreds of people on a tower. Poon Hill has the easier access and a wider spread of peaks to the east. Many treks visit both, with Poon Hill on one morning and Khopra for two evenings.
What time is sunset at Khopra Danda?
In October sunset is around 5:45 pm, moving to about 5:15 pm by late November and early December. The best colour on Dhaulagiri comes in the 30–40 minutes before the sun drops below the horizon, followed by a short alpenglow. Be on the knoll above the lodge by 4:45 pm in autumn to catch the whole sequence.
Can I see Dhaulagiri from Khopra in spring?
Often, but less reliably than in autumn. In March and April the mornings are usually clear, while afternoon haze and cloud build over the Kali Gandaki, so the sunset can be hidden. Plan to watch at dawn as well. In May, dust and pre-monsoon cloud make long views less predictable still, though the rhododendrons below the ridge are in flower.
