Alarms go off at about 3:30 am. Breakfast is porridge, tea and toast in a crowded dining room, and by 4 am lines of headtorches are moving up the steep path from Thorong Phedi to High Camp. That first hour gains about 430 m and is the steepest of the day. From High Camp the trail continues up a long valley of moraine and scree, passing a tea hut, cairns and several false summits that make the pass feel always just ahead.
Pace is everything. Our guides set a slow, steady rhythm, with short pauses every 20–30 minutes for water and snacks. At 5,000 m and above, each step needs a breath or two; trying to rush leads to exhaustion. Most groups reach the prayer flags at the top between 8 and 10 am, after 4–5 hours from Phedi. On a clear day the views reach back over the Chulu peaks and Annapurna, and ahead to the Mustang hills.
After photos and a hot drink at the seasonal tea hut, the descent begins. The trail drops steeply on gravel and loose rock for about 1,700 m to Muktinath at 3,710 m, 4–5 hours with a tea stop at Chabarbu. Knees and toes take a beating; poles help enormously. By early afternoon you are in Muktinath, tired, sunburnt and pleased, with a hot shower and a celebration dinner waiting. Muktinath's lodges fill quickly in October, so we book ahead.

Questions travellers ask
How long does it take to cross Thorong La?
From Thorong Phedi at 4,450 m, plan on 8–10 hours in total: about 4–5 hours up to the pass at 5,416 m and 4–5 hours down to Muktinath at 3,710 m. From High Camp at 4,880 m, the climb takes 2.5–3.5 hours, so the full day is 7–9 hours. Slow walkers or bad snow conditions add more.
Should I sleep at Thorong Phedi or High Camp?
If you are well acclimatised, High Camp shortens crossing day by about an hour. If you feel any altitude symptoms, Thorong Phedi at 4,450 m is safer because it is 430 m lower. High Camp's lodge can be crowded and colder. We usually plan for Phedi and let the group decide on the day based on how everyone feels.
Can I hire a horse to cross Thorong La?
In season, horses and handlers have been available at Thorong Phedi to carry trekkers part or all of the way to the pass, at a cost negotiated locally. It helps tired walkers but does not solve altitude sickness, which needs descent. If you are seriously unwell, a horse is not a substitute for going down. Check availability on arrival.
