Barauli village and farm walk

A morning walk with your host through the village, school, fields and community forest, joining in seasonal farm work and learning how the Tharu live alongside wildlife from the park.

  • 2 hours
  • Morning, Oct–Mar
  • Included in the homestay stay

After tea and breakfast, a host walks you through the village. You see traditional houses with thick mud walls and painted reliefs, grain stored in tall clay containers, fishing traps woven from bamboo, and the buffalo and goats that most families keep. The route continues through the fields, where depending on the season you might help plant rice seedlings in knee-deep mud, cut wheat, or pick mustard.

Your host also explains life beside the national park: electric fences to keep out elephants and rhinos, the community forest where families collect fodder under agreed rules, and how a share of the park's income supports local projects. The school is often on the route, and if you visit on a weekday you can meet teachers and see how classes run.

The walk is flat and 3 to 5 km, with stops to talk and rest. Bring a hat and water, and old shoes if you want to join farm work. Ask before photographing people, and expect children to follow you around for part of the way.

Questions travellers ask

Can I join farm work at the Barauli homestay?

Yes, if the season allows. You might plant rice in June and July, harvest in October and November, or help in vegetable gardens in winter. Your host decides what is safe and useful. Wear old clothes and shoes you do not mind getting muddy.

Is Barauli safe from wild animals?

Yes, for visitors who follow local advice. Wild elephants and rhinos sometimes enter fields at night, so the village uses electric fences and people stay indoors after dark. Daytime walks with your host are safe. Do not walk along the river or into the forest alone, especially at dusk.

How does the homestay help the community?

Income from cottages and meals goes to the host families, and part of it goes to a community fund managed by the women's group. The project gives local women an income and a role in decisions. Buying local crafts and food in the village adds to that benefit.
