The Kanchenjunga region is remote and the jeep ride from Phungling into the Tamor valley is the last easy exit, so we use a day here to get everything right. In the morning your guide checks your restricted area permit, Kanchenjunga Conservation Area permit and trekking registration against your passport, and goes through your gear list item by item. Phungling's shops can fill gaps such as gloves, socks, batteries and snacks.
Late morning we take a two to three hour hike on the ridge above town for views up the valley and a first test of boots and packs. It also helps those who arrived after two long days on the road from Bhadrapur. Back in town, the afternoon is free to rest and repack, leaving anything you do not need at the hotel.
Before dinner your guide gives a full briefing: the daily stages and walking hours, where the high points are, the signs of altitude sickness, how the team will respond, phone and satellite coverage, and what happens if weather or landslides force changes. It is time well spent on a trek of three weeks.

Questions travellers ask
Can I get Kanchenjunga permits in Taplejung?
The restricted area permit is issued in Kathmandu through a licensed trekking agency before you travel. The Kanchenjunga Conservation Area permit and checks happen on the way. We arrange all permits in Kathmandu; check current status before you travel.
Is there an ATM in Taplejung?
Yes, Phungling has several bank ATMs, though they occasionally run out of cash or go offline. Withdraw before you reach town if you can, and carry enough Nepali rupees for the whole trek.
Can I store luggage in Phungling?
Yes. Most guesthouses store extra bags for trekkers at no or low cost. We arrange this with the hotel we use before and after the trek.
