Nangkartshang acclimatisation hike

Climb the steep ridge behind Dingboche towards Nangkartshang Peak (≈ 5,083 m) on your rest day, turning around wherever you feel right, then sleep back at 4,410 m. It is the most important acclimatisation hike of the Everest Base Camp trek.

  • 3–5 hours return
  • Early morning, Oct–Nov and Mar–May
  • Included in our EBC treks

Leave after breakfast, while the air is calm and clear. The trail starts behind the lodges at the northern edge of Dingboche, climbs past a chorten with prayer flags and then zigzags steeply up the grassy and rocky ridge that divides the Imja and Khumbu valleys. Within an hour you look down on the stone-walled fields of Dingboche and across to Ama Dablam, Kangtega and Thamserku. The higher you go, the more the Lhotse wall and Island Peak open up to the east.

There are several natural stopping points. A prayer-flag cairn at about 4,700–4,800 m is a common turnaround for those who feel the altitude. Stronger walkers continue on rockier ground towards the summit cairn at about 5,083 m, from where Makalu (8,485 m), the world's fifth-highest peak, shows its granite summit to the east beyond the Imja valley, and Cho Oyu sometimes appears to the north-west. The last section is rocky and slow.

Allow two to three hours up and one to one and a half down. The aim is to raise your body's exposure to altitude for a few hours and then return to sleep lower, which helps acclimatisation for Lobuche and Gorak Shep. Go slowly, drink water and turn around if you develop a headache, dizziness or nausea. After lunch, rest, read and drink; do not sleep all afternoon, as that can worsen breathing at night.

Questions travellers ask

How high is Nangkartshang Peak?

Nangkartshang Peak, above Dingboche, is usually given as about 5,083 m, though sources vary slightly. Most trekkers climb to a viewpoint between 4,700 and 5,000 m on their rest day and turn back. Reaching the top is not necessary for acclimatisation.

Is the Nangkartshang hike hard?

It is steep and slow because of the altitude, gaining 400–670 m from Dingboche. The trail is not technical. Fit trekkers manage it in 3–5 hours return. Go at your own pace and turn back if you feel unwell.

Can I see Makalu from Nangkartshang?

Yes, on clear days. From the upper ridge and summit you see Makalu (8,485 m) to the east, along with Lhotse, Island Peak, Ama Dablam and sometimes Cho Oyu. Morning gives the best chance before clouds build.
