Tenzing-Hillary Airport is famous because of its geometry. The runway is 527 m long and 30 m wide, rises at roughly 12 percent from the lower end, and finishes against a stone wall and the hillside. Pilots land uphill, using the slope to slow down, and take off downhill to gain speed before the end drops away into the Dudh Koshi valley about 600 m below. There is no second chance on approach, which is why flights only run in clear visual conditions.
The best time to watch is the first three hours after dawn on a clear day in October, November, April or early May. The first wave of planes from Kathmandu or Ramechhap arrives at around 6:30 to 7 am, unloads trekkers and cargo in minutes, loads returning trekkers and leaves. Helicopters shuttle in between. The terraces of several lodges and cafés face the runway, and there is a viewing spot by the airport perimeter wall where photography is allowed from outside the fence.
For most trekkers this happens on the last morning while waiting for their own flight, so it doubles as entertainment during delays. Keep your boarding card and bag with your guide, stay within call, and do not climb on walls or enter restricted areas. If cloud rolls up the valley, flights stop quickly and may resume an hour later, so watching the sky over the gorge is also a good way to guess whether you will fly today.

Questions travellers ask
Is Lukla airport really the most dangerous airport in the world?
It is often called that because of the short sloping runway, mountain approach and fast-changing weather, and there have been fatal accidents. Flights only operate in visual conditions with specially trained pilots and short take-off aircraft. Weather delays are far more common than incidents, and operators cancel flights when cloud is low.
Can I take photos of planes at Lukla?
Yes, from lodge terraces and public areas outside the airport fence. Inside the terminal and on the apron, follow staff instructions, as security staff may ask you not to photograph checkpoints. A short telephoto lens of 70–200 mm works well for landings from the cafés along the runway.
What time do flights from Lukla start?
In clear weather the first flights land around 6:30 to 7 am and most traffic finishes by late morning, when cloud and wind build in the valleys. Your guide will take you to check in at about 6 am. Afternoon flights do happen in very settled weather but should not be relied on.
