Full-day jeep safari on the Karnali side

The standard way to look for tigers in Bardia: a full day in an open jeep with a naturalist and a packed lunch, waiting at river crossings and grassland edges on the Karnali side of the park.

  • 8–9 hours
  • Feb–May for tigers; Oct–Jan for comfort
  • ≈ ₹14,000–18,000 per jeep plus park fees

Bardia jeep safaris are long and slow. You leave Thakurdwara around 6:30 am, drive through sal forest to the grasslands of Baghaura and Lamkauli, and spend much of the day parked quietly at points where tigers cross or drink, often on the banks of the Geruwa channel of the Karnali. Lunch is eaten at a riverside watchtower or picnic spot.

Through the day you are likely to see spotted deer, hog deer, barking deer, langur and rhesus monkeys, wild boar, peafowl and many raptors. Rhinos and wild elephants appear on some days. Tigers are seen on a minority of drives, more often in April and May, when the grass has been cut and burnt and animals gather at the remaining water.

Up to six guests share an open jeep, though private jeeps are easy to arrange. A licensed nature guide and the park driver are required. Bring a hat, a scarf for dust, sunscreen and binoculars. Mornings from December to February can be foggy and cold, so pack a warm layer for the first two hours.

Questions travellers ask

What are the chances of seeing a tiger on a Bardia jeep safari?

Honestly, it varies a lot. In April and May, a full-day drive gives a real chance, and guests staying three or four nights with a mix of jeep and walking days often see at least one tiger. In winter and after the monsoon the odds fall. No operator can promise a sighting, and anyone who does is overselling.

Is a full-day jeep safari suitable for children?

Children aged about eight and above usually manage well, provided they can sit quietly for long spells. The day is hot, dusty and slow, with many hours of waiting. For younger children a half-day drive or a morning river float is easier. Bring snacks, water and something to do during the waits.

Do I need a guide for a Bardia jeep safari?

Yes. Park rules require a licensed nature guide with every vehicle, and jeeps are registered with the park. Your lodge or our team arranges the jeep, guide, permits and lunch. Park entry for foreigners has been NPR 1,500 per day plus VAT, less for SAARC nationals; check current status before you travel.
