Halji clusters tightly around its gompa, with houses joined by narrow lanes and roofs stacked high with juniper and brushwood for winter. Rinchenling is generally said to be around 800 years old or more, and local accounts connect it with the period of Rinchen Zangpo, the great translator who founded temples across western Tibet. Whatever the exact date, it is among the oldest active monasteries in Nepal.
Inside the assembly hall, butter lamps light statues of the Buddha and protector deities, old thangkas and walls darkened by centuries of smoke. The monastery holds important texts, and a caretaker will usually open the inner rooms for respectful visitors. The community also maintains chortens and prayer walls around the village.
Walk clockwise around the gompa and chortens, remove hats inside, and do not touch statues or offerings. Ask before photographing; flash is not appropriate. A donation towards upkeep is expected. If you are lucky with timing, you may see a puja with drums and horns.

Questions travellers ask
How old is Rinchenling Gompa in Halji?
It is commonly described as around 800 years old or more, and local tradition links it with the era of the translator Rinchen Zangpo in the 10th–11th centuries. Exact dating is uncertain, but it is among the oldest active Buddhist monasteries in Nepal and the religious centre of the Limi Valley.
Can visitors enter Rinchenling Gompa?
Yes, respectful visitors are usually welcomed when a caretaker or monk is present. Remove hats and shoes where indicated, walk clockwise, do not touch statues or offerings, and ask before taking photographs. A donation towards upkeep is customary. Your guide will arrange the visit with the village.
What Buddhist tradition is followed in Limi?
The villages of Limi mainly follow the Drikung Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, with strong ties to monasteries in western Tibet around Mount Kailash. Village life follows the Tibetan calendar, and festivals at Halji draw people from Til and Jang. Visitors may see pujas, especially in summer.
