Changunarayan temple and 464 CE inscription

A guided circuit of the Changunarayan courtyard, reading the Licchavi sculpture and the Manadeva pillar of 464 CE with a guide who knows the stories behind each relief. We time it for the morning puja, when the temple is busiest with local worshippers.

  • 1.5–2 hours
  • Morning, Oct–Apr
  • Included in our Bhaktapur day tours

We start at the stone Garuda on the west side, the line every pilgrim follows, and then cross to the inscription pillar beside the main door. Your guide reads out the substance of the Sanskrit text: King Manadeva's father has died, his mother Rajyavati resolves to join him on the pyre, and the young king persuades her to live before setting out on campaigns east and west. Dated 464 CE, it is the earliest firm date in Nepali history, and it pins this hilltop as a royal shrine at least sixteen centuries ago.

From the pillar, we work clockwise around the pagoda. The reliefs in the courtyard corners are the reason art historians come: Vishnu Vikranta, his leg raised mid-stride across heaven, earth and the underworld; the ten-headed Vishwarupa, layered with smaller figures; and a Narasimha with the demon king across his knees. Several are carved from single slabs and date from the fifth to the seventh century. Your guide also points out the gilded door frames, the roof struts of 1702 and the smaller shrines to Chinnamasta and Krishna.

Hindu visitors can enter the sanctum doorway for darshan of Vishnu; the inner image is not photographed, and the priests ask for silence during aarti. Non-Hindus are welcome in the courtyard and on the plinth. Entry is NPR 400 for foreign visitors and NPR 300 for SAARC nationals, including Indians, as we last confirmed; check current status before you travel. The full circuit takes 90 minutes at a relaxed pace, longer if you want to sketch or photograph the sculpture in detail.

Questions travellers ask

Can non-Hindus enter Changunarayan temple?

Non-Hindus can enter the courtyard, walk the plinth and photograph the exterior and sculpture freely. Only Hindu devotees step to the sanctum doorway for darshan, and no one photographs the inner image. In practice this restriction costs visitors very little, because the inscription, the reliefs and the carved struts are all outside the shrine itself.

What does the Changunarayan inscription say?

It is a royal record by King Manadeva, dated 464 CE, written in Sanskrit verse. It tells how his widowed mother, Queen Rajyavati, wished to follow her husband in death, how Manadeva persuaded her to live, and how he then led military campaigns to the east and west. It is the oldest dated inscription so far found in Nepal.

How long should I spend at Changunarayan?

Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for the temple courtyard with a guide, plus 30 to 60 minutes for the village lane and a museum. If you add the walk down to Bhaktapur, budget a half day in total. Photographers who want both morning and late-afternoon light sometimes stay overnight in a village homestay.
