Patan Museum and Durbar Square visit

A guided half day in Patan's royal square: the stone Krishna Mandir, the palace courtyards with the royal bath of Tusha Hiti, and about two hours in the Patan Museum, where galleries of bronzes and woodcarving explain the art you will see on every temple in the valley.

  • 3 hours
  • Morning, all year
  • ≈ ₹2,000 per person plus entry fees

We start at Mangal Bazaar around 9 am and work north through Durbar Square. Your guide shows you the octagonal stone Chyasin Dewal, the Bhimsen temple with its gilded balcony, the Vishwanath temple guarded by stone elephants and the pillar of King Yoganarendra Malla, who kneels facing the palace under a cobra hood with a small bird perched on top. Local legend says that while the bird remains, the king may yet return. Then we stand before Krishna Mandir to read its carved friezes of the Mahabharata and Ramayana from outside.

The palace has three main courtyards. Mul Chowk, the largest and oldest, was the setting for royal ceremonies and is flanked by the Taleju temples. Sundari Chowk holds Tusha Hiti, a sunken royal bath lined with stone carvings of gods and serpents that was restored after the 2015 earthquake. Access to individual courtyards varies with restoration work, so we confirm on the day. Keshav Narayan Chowk, the northern courtyard, houses the Patan Museum, restored with Austrian help and opened in 1997.

Inside the museum we spend about two hours. Galleries cover Hindu and Buddhist iconography, the lost-wax casting process with tools and moulds from Patan workshops, and the structure of a pagoda temple from foundation to pinnacle. Labels are in clear English, and once you have seen these ideas explained, every temple you visit afterwards is easier to read. Foreigners pay NPR 1,000 and SAARC nationals NPR 250 for the square; museum entry arrangements change, so check current status before you travel. Lunch in the garden café behind the museum rounds off the morning.

Questions travellers ask

Is the Patan Museum worth visiting?

Yes, it is the best introduction to Nepali sacred art you will find. In about two hours its galleries of bronze, stone and wood sculpture and its lost-wax casting display explain what you see on temples across the valley. It occupies a restored palace courtyard, and its clear English labels make it especially useful for first-time visitors.

What are Patan Durbar Square opening hours?

The square is a public space you can walk through at any hour, and the ticket booths staff the approaches through daylight hours. The Patan Museum keeps shorter hours, usually from mid-morning to late afternoon, and can close on some public holidays. Times change, so check current status before you travel and aim to arrive by 10 am.

Do Indians pay the foreigner rate at Patan Durbar Square?

No. Indian nationals pay the SAARC rate, which has been NPR 250 (about ₹160) against NPR 1,000 for other foreigners, and Nepali citizens enter free. Carry a passport or voter ID to show at the ticket booth if asked. Fees change from time to time, so check current status before you travel.
