Tharepati sits on a ridge at about 3,690 m where the trail from Kutumsang meets the route from Gosaikunda and Lauribina La. Its handful of lodges face north and east, and on clear mornings the Langtang range, Dorje Lakpa and the Jugal Himal stand out in sequence. A short climb above the lodges to a prayer-flag knoll gives the widest view. Dawn is best; cloud often rises by 10 am.
From Tharepati, the trail drops steeply east, losing about 1,150 m in 3–4 hours through dense rhododendron, oak and fir forest, crossing streams by wooden bridges. In March and April this forest flowers red. The path is steep and can be slippery when wet, so trekking poles help. Langur monkeys and pheasants are often seen.
Melamchi Gaun sits on an open shelf above the Melamchi valley with a gompa, chortens and a few lodges. Visit the monastery in the afternoon, where monks or a caretaker can show you the prayer hall. The village is a good overnight stop before crossing the valley to Tarkeghyang the next day, a walk of 5–6 hours down to the Melamchi Khola and up again.

Questions travellers ask
How high is Tharepati on the Helambu trek?
Tharepati lies at about 3,690 m, the highest point on the standard Helambu trek from Sundarijal. It is also where the Langtang–Gosaikunda–Helambu route arrives after crossing Lauribina La (4,610 m). Altitude sickness is uncommon on Helambu, but sleep and walk slowly here if you feel symptoms.
Is the descent from Tharepati to Melamchi Gaun steep?
Yes. It drops about 1,150 m in 3–4 hours on a forest trail with steep sections, roots and stone steps that are slippery after rain or frost. Trekking poles and good boots with grip help a lot. Knees take a pounding, so go slowly and take breaks.
Can I see mountains on the Helambu trek?
Yes, especially from Chisapani, Tharepati and Ama Yangri. On clear mornings you see the Langtang range, Dorje Lakpa, the Jugal Himal and sometimes Gaurishankar. Views are best from October to April. Much of the trail is forested, so plan to be at the viewpoints early in the day.
