A direct drive from Lumbini to Tansen takes about three hours. Adding Devdaha extends it by roughly two hours and gives the day a theme: leaving the Buddha's birthplace, visiting his mother's home, and climbing into the hills. We leave Lumbini after breakfast and reach Devdaha in just over an hour.
After an hour or so at the Maya Devi shrine and the Koliya sites, we drive 12 km to Butwal for lunch. From Butwal the Siddhartha Highway climbs straight into the hills through the Tinau gorge, passing the Siddhababa temple, where most Nepali drivers stop briefly to pray for a safe journey.
The road winds up through forest to the Bartung junction and the short link road to Tansen, arriving by mid-afternoon at about 1,350 m. The temperature drop from the plains is noticeable, often 8–10 °C cooler, and there is time for a first walk in the old town before dinner.

Questions travellers ask
How much time does Devdaha add to the drive to Tansen?
About two hours: roughly 30 minutes of extra driving and 1–1.5 hours at the sites. Leaving Lumbini at 8.30 am, you reach Tansen by around 3 pm, including lunch in Butwal. Without Devdaha the drive takes about three hours.
Is the road from Butwal to Tansen safe?
Yes, with an experienced driver. The Siddhartha Highway climbs steeply through the Tinau gorge with many bends, and traffic includes buses and trucks. Landslides can occur in the monsoon, so check current status before you travel between June and September.
What is the Siddhababa temple?
Siddhababa is a popular Hindu temple on the Siddhartha Highway just north of Butwal, at the mouth of the Tinau gorge. Many drivers and travellers stop to make an offering for a safe journey into the hills. It takes only 10–15 minutes.
