Heli tours leave Kathmandu soon after sunrise and follow the Budhi Gandaki valley north, with Ganesh Himal and Himal Chuli off the wings. If the pilot judges wind, cloud and payload safe, the helicopter lands near base camp for 10 to 15 minutes. That is long enough for photographs and a look at the icefall, and short enough to keep the risk of altitude sickness low for people who have come straight from 1,400 m.
Payload is the key limit. Helicopters lift far less at 4,800 m than in Kathmandu, so a five-seat aircraft may land with only two or three passengers at a time, shuttling the rest of the group from Samagaun. The pilot always has the final word, and on some mornings the landing becomes a flyover instead.
This landing is not suitable for anyone with heart or lung conditions, high blood pressure that is not controlled, or pregnancy. Children should be over five, and everyone should move slowly on the ground. If anyone feels dizzy or breathless, tell the pilot and return to the cabin at once.

Questions travellers ask
How long can a helicopter stay at Manaslu Base Camp?
Usually 10 to 15 minutes. At about 4,800 m the risk of altitude sickness rises quickly for people who flew from Kathmandu at 1,400 m, and engines and payload limits also argue for short stops. Longer breaks happen at Samagaun, at 3,530 m, where tours stop for breakfast.
Is a base camp landing guaranteed on the Manaslu heli tour?
No. The pilot decides on the day based on wind, cloud and weight. In good autumn and spring mornings landings are often possible; otherwise the tour flies past base camp and lands in Samagaun. Prices do not usually change because the flying time is similar.
Who should not land at Manaslu Base Camp by helicopter?
People with heart disease, lung problems, uncontrolled high blood pressure or recent surgery, pregnant women and very young children should not land at this height. If you are unsure, ask your doctor before booking. Everyone else should move slowly, avoid running for photos and return to the cabin if they feel unwell.
