For travellers who prefer not to climb through the forest, a taxi from Lakeside reaches the car park below the stupa in about 25 minutes via the Siddhartha Highway and the Anadu hill road. From the car park, a 10–15 minute walk up steps leads to the pagoda. Aim to arrive about 90 minutes before sunset to walk around the stupa while it is open and find a spot on the terrace or at a nearby cafe.
As the sun drops in the west behind you, the light falls directly on the lake, Lakeside and the mountains to the north. Machhapuchhre and Annapurna South turn gold and then pink, while boats crawl across the darkening lake below. The stupa itself, white against the sky, glows in the last light and makes a fine photograph from the lower terrace. Cafes nearby serve tea and snacks with the same view, and their terraces fill up around sunset in peak season.
Head back down to the car park soon after sunset; the steps are lit only partly and the road is narrow. Upper levels of the stupa may close earlier than the grounds, so check current timings on arrival. Clear sunsets are most common from October to February. In the monsoon, cloud usually hides the mountains, though the lake view remains. Arrange for your taxi to wait, as finding one after dark on the hill can be difficult.

Questions travellers ask
Can I drive to the World Peace Pagoda?
Yes. A road leads up Anadu hill from the Siddhartha Highway near Chhorepatan to a car park below the stupa, about 25 minutes by taxi from Lakeside. From there it is a 10–15 minute walk up steps. This route suits seniors and anyone short of time.
What are the World Peace Pagoda timings?
The grounds are open through the day, generally from early morning until around sunset, and the upper level of the stupa may close earlier. Timings vary by season and for prayers. Check current status on arrival or with your hotel, and plan to descend soon after sunset.
Is sunset or sunrise better at the Peace Pagoda?
Sunset is better here. The stupa faces north over the lake, and late afternoon light from the west falls on the Annapurnas and Phewa. For sunrise, Sarangkot or Australian Camp give better views. The pagoda is also pleasant in the morning when the lake is calm.
