Altitude sickness basics
Acute mountain sickness (AMS) can start above about 2,500 m, whatever your age or fitness.
Know the symptoms
Headache, with loss of appetite or nausea
Unusual tiredness or weakness, dizziness
Poor sleep
Climb slowly
Above 3,000 m, raise your sleeping altitude by no more than about 500 m a night
Take a rest day every three to four days, or for every 1,000 m gained
Climb high, sleep low: a short walk up in the afternoon, then sleep lower
Drink water, eat well and skip alcohol for the first days up high
Go down if it gets worse
Never go higher with symptoms; rest at the same height until they pass
If symptoms worsen, descend at once, even at night
Confusion, stumbling, breathlessness at rest or a wet cough are emergencies: descend and get medical help
General information, not medical advice. See a doctor before a high trip, especially with a heart or lung condition, and ask about acetazolamide. Check that your insurance covers helicopter rescue to the altitude you will reach.
