Buddha Jayanti in Lumbini

Buddha Jayanti, the full moon of the Nepali month of Baisakh, marks the Buddha's birth, enlightenment and death. In Lumbini, his birthplace, it brings processions, chanting by monks from many countries, butter lamps around the Maya Devi Temple and tens of thousands of pilgrims.

  • Full moon of Baisakh, late Apr–May

Buddha Jayanti, also called Buddha Purnima, falls on the full moon of Baisakh, which lands between late April and late May. Theravada tradition holds that the Buddha's birth, his enlightenment at Bodh Gaya and his passing at Kushinagar all happened on this full moon. Lumbini, as the birthplace, holds Nepal's largest celebration, with national leaders, foreign delegations and pilgrims from India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar, Tibet and beyond arriving in the days before.

The day begins early in the Sacred Garden, where monks and nuns from the monastic zone gather for chanting near the Maya Devi Temple and the bodhi tree. Processions carry Buddha images along the central canal and between monasteries, and many temples hold special pujas, dharma talks and free meals. In the evening, butter lamps and candles are lit around the Puskarini pond and in monastery courtyards. Nepali Buddhists, especially Newar and Tamang communities, travel from across the country.

The festival falls in the hottest season, with afternoon temperatures often near 40 °C, so the most rewarding hours are dawn and dusk. Hotels in Lumbini and Bhairahawa fill well ahead, and security is tight around the Sacred Garden when dignitaries attend. Many pilgrims combine the day with a quieter visit to Tilaurakot or Ramagrama before or after.

Tips

  • Book Lumbini hotels two to three months ahead, as rooms sell out for the days around the full moon.
  • Reach the Sacred Garden before 6 am for chanting, before the heat and the largest crowds arrive.
  • Carry water, a hat and light white or pale clothing; afternoon temperatures can approach 40 °C.
  • Expect security checks and some closures when national leaders or foreign delegations attend the main ceremony.

Questions travellers ask

When is Buddha Jayanti in Lumbini?

Buddha Jayanti falls on the full moon of the Nepali month of Baisakh, usually between late April and late May. The date changes every year with the lunar calendar. It is a public holiday in Nepal, and celebrations in Lumbini begin the day before. Check current status before you travel to confirm the year's date.

What happens at Lumbini on Buddha Jayanti?

Monks and nuns gather for chanting at the Maya Devi Temple, processions carry Buddha images through the monastic zone, monasteries hold special prayers and free meals, and butter lamps are lit around the sacred pond at dusk. National leaders often attend a formal ceremony, and pilgrims arrive from across Asia.

Is it a good idea to visit Lumbini on Buddha Jayanti?

For pilgrims, yes; it is the most meaningful day of the year to be at the birthplace. Expect crowds, heat near 40 °C, security checks and higher hotel demand. If you prefer quiet reflection, visit a few days before or after, when monasteries are still decorated but crowds are smaller.

Is Buddha Purnima the same as Buddha Jayanti?

Yes. Buddha Jayanti and Buddha Purnima are two names for the same full moon festival, also known internationally as Vesak. In India it is usually called Buddha Purnima; in Nepal both names are used. Some countries, such as those following the Chinese calendar, mark the Buddha's birthday on a different date.
