This one-way route suits travellers who arrive in Nepal by road at Sonauli and want to fly home from Kathmandu, without ever doing more than five hours in the car on a single day. Instead of the long direct run from Lumbini to Pokhara, we stop overnight in Tansen, a Newar hill town known for Dhaka weaving, and instead of driving Pokhara to Kathmandu in one go, we break at Bandipur, a preserved ridge-top bazaar with Himalayan views.

The result is a trip that shows Nepal's change in height and culture step by step: from the 150 m Terai plain at Lumbini to Tansen at 1,350 m, the lakes of Pokhara under the Annapurnas, Bandipur's 18th-century trading street and the temple squares of Kathmandu. Indian travellers cross with a passport or voter ID; other nationals get a Nepal visa on arrival at Belahiya.

Highlights

  • Maya Devi Temple and Ashoka pillar in Lumbini
  • Tansen old town, Dhaka weavers and Srinagar hill sunrise
  • Sarangkot sunrise and a boat on Phewa Lake in Pokhara
  • Car-free Newar bazaar and mountain views in Bandipur
  • Swayambhunath, Patan Durbar Square and Boudhanath in Kathmandu
  • No drive longer than about five hours

Questions about this trip

How do I travel from Sonauli to Kathmandu?

The direct road from Sonauli to Kathmandu is about 280 km via Butwal, Narayanghat and Mugling, taking 8–9 hours by car or tourist bus. You can also fly from Bhairahawa, 4 km from the border, to Kathmandu in 35 minutes. This tour takes eight days and stops at Lumbini, Tansen, Pokhara and Bandipur on the way.

Why stop in Tansen and Bandipur?

Both break long drives into comfortable halves and add two of Nepal's best-preserved hill towns. Tansen offers Newar lanes, Dhaka weaving and Himalayan sunrise; Bandipur has a car-free bazaar and views from its ridge. Without them, you would face two days of 7–8 hours in the car.

What does this tour cost per person?

It starts at about ₹33,000 per person for Indian nationals or US$ 420 for foreign nationals, twin sharing, with 3-star hotels, breakfast and dinner, a private car and driver for the whole route, border assistance and local guides. Monument fees in Kathmandu and lunches are extra.

Can I start this tour from Gorakhpur?

Yes. We can add an Indian car from Gorakhpur station or airport to Sonauli, about three hours, for an extra charge, and meet you at the border with the Nepal car. If you prefer a loop that returns to Gorakhpur, see our Nepal tour from Gorakhpur via Sonauli.

Is this tour good for honeymooners?

Yes. Couples enjoy the quiet of Lumbini, the hill-town evenings in Tansen and Bandipur, sunrise at Sarangkot and boating on Phewa Lake. We can upgrade Pokhara and Kathmandu to 4- or 5-star hotels with lake or garden views and add a candlelit dinner on request.

Can foreigners enter Nepal at Sonauli?

Yes. Sonauli–Belahiya is an official crossing for third-country nationals, with Indian exit and Nepal entry immigration offices. Most nationalities can get a Nepal visa on arrival here, paid in US dollars. Cross in daytime and keep a passport photo handy. Check current status before you travel.

How long are the drives on this tour?

Drives are 45 minutes on day 1, about 3 hours on day 2, 4.5–5 hours on day 3, 2.5 hours on day 5 and about 5 hours on day 6. Pokhara and Kathmandu days involve short city drives only. Highway works can add time, so we start early on longer days.

Can we bring our Indian car on this route?

Yes, with a customs pass from the Bhairahawa customs office, charged per day and limited to 30 days a year, plus RC, licence and insurance. But this is a one-way route ending at Kathmandu airport, so a Nepal car makes more sense. Check current status before you travel.

What is the best time for this Sonauli to Kathmandu tour?

October to April is best. October to February gives the clearest mountain views at Tansen, Sarangkot and Bandipur; March and April bring rhododendrons but hazier skies. May is hot in Lumbini, and the June to September monsoon brings cloud, rain and landslides on the hill roads.
