Gaura Parva

Gaura is the biggest festival of Nepal's far west, celebrating the goddess Gaura (Parvati) and her marriage to Maheshwar (Shiva). Married women soak five grains, fast and worship, and villages sing Deuda songs and dance in circles for several days in late summer.

  • Aug–Sep, from Bhadra Krishna Panchami, about 4–5 days

Gaura is celebrated across Sudurpashchim Province, in parts of Karnali Province and across the border in Kumaon in Uttarakhand. It begins on Biruda Panchami, the fifth day of the dark fortnight of Bhadra, when married women soak five kinds of grains, the biruda, in a copper or brass vessel. Over the following days the grains are washed at a spring or stream, offered to the deities and later shared as prasad, and women fast and pray for the well-being of their husbands and families.

Figures of Gaura and Maheshwar are made from grasses, plants and cloth, dressed and decorated, and carried to a community courtyard called the Gaura khalo or Gaura ghar. There they are worshipped over several days as the divine couple, with songs that tell the story of Gaura's marriage. Women wear their finest saris and jewellery, often with red dresses and gold nose rings typical of the far west, and young girls take part alongside married women.

The evenings belong to music. Men and women form circles to sing Deuda, the call-and-response folk songs of the region, and to dance the Deuda and other local dances, sometimes late into the night. Songs range from devotional to witty exchanges about love, migration and village life. In Dhangadhi and the hill towns, the festival has also become a stage for cultural programmes and a public holiday in the province.

Tips

  • Ask a local guide to take you to a village Gaura khalo rather than only a staged town event.
  • Dress modestly and ask before photographing women during rituals.
  • Expect monsoon rain and road delays in the hills; base yourself in Dhangadhi or Dipayal.

Questions travellers ask

When is Gaura Parva celebrated?

Gaura begins on Bhadra Krishna Panchami in the Nepali lunar calendar, which falls in late August or early September, and lasts about four to five days, ending around Gaura Ashtami. Exact dates change every year with the lunar calendar, so check current status before you travel and confirm with local sources.

What happens during Gaura festival?

Married women soak five grains (biruda), fast and worship Gaura and Maheshwar. Figures of the divine couple are made from plants and cloth, dressed and carried to a community courtyard, where they are worshipped for several days. Evenings bring Deuda singing and circle dancing by men and women.

Where is the best place to see Gaura Parva?

Anywhere in Sudurpashchim Province, including Dhangadhi, Dadeldhura, Doti, Baitadi and the hill districts. Villages show the most traditional form, with rituals at the local Gaura khalo, while Dhangadhi holds larger public programmes. A local guide makes it far easier to join respectfully.

Can tourists join Gaura celebrations?

Yes, visitors are generally welcome to watch and often invited to join the Deuda circles in the evening. Be respectful during rituals, which are religious and mainly for married women, and ask before taking photographs. A small offering or contribution to the community event is appreciated.
