Dhangadhi grew from a Tharu market village into the commercial capital of Sudurpashchim Province, with around 200,000 people at the 2021 census. It is flat, hot, spread out and practical: the place where traders from the hill districts of Doti, Achham, Bajhang and Bajura come down to buy goods, and where most travel to the far-western hills begins. Its airport, about 8 km from the centre, has one of the longest domestic runways in Nepal.
For travellers it is mainly a gateway. Shuklaphanta National Park is about 1.5 hours west, Bardia about 5 hours east, and the hill roads to Khaptad and Ramaroshan climb north from Attariya on the edge of town. The Gauriphanta border crossing into Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh is a few kilometres south, giving Indian travellers a direct route to the far west from Lucknow or Bareilly.
There is enough to fill a day if you have one. Ghodaghodi Tal, a Ramsar-listed lake complex on the highway east of town, is excellent for birds and turtles. Tikapur Park on the Karnali river is a large public garden popular with local families. In town, Tharu restaurants serve fish, snails and rice dishes rarely found elsewhere in Nepal. Winters are mild with morning fog; April to June is very hot, often above 40 °C.
What to see and do
- Ghodaghodi Tal
A complex of oxbow lakes and marshes in sal forest about 60 km east of Dhangadhi on the East–West Highway, listed as a Ramsar wetland. Waterbirds, turtles and mugger crocodiles live here, and a small temple stands on the main lake's shore.
- Tikapur Park
A large riverside park on the Karnali at Tikapur, about 2 hours east, laid out with gardens, lawns and shaded walks. It is a favourite weekend outing for local families and a pleasant stop between Dhangadhi and Bardia.
- Tharu food
Tharu cooking uses river fish, freshwater snails, crabs, rice flour dumplings called dhikri and greens from the forest. Several restaurants in Dhangadhi serve Tharu thalis, and they are worth seeking out.
- Gateway to the hills
Roads climb north from Attariya through Budar and Dadeldhura to Dipayal, Silgadhi and Sanfebagar, starting points for Khaptad National Park and Ramaroshan. Dhangadhi is where groups stock up and hire jeeps for these long drives.
- Indian border at Gauriphanta
The Dhangadhi–Gauriphanta crossing connects with Palia and Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh. Indian nationals cross with ID and no visa. It is the closest crossing for Dudhwa National Park on the Indian side.

Where to stay
Dhangadhi has the widest choice of hotels in the far west, with several modern mid-range and upper-mid-range business hotels in the centre and along the main roads, most with air-conditioning, restaurants and parking. They cater to NGO staff, traders and officials, so standards are reasonable and staff speak English. Budget guesthouses cluster near the bus park. We choose hotels for each group based on current standards and the next day's plan, close to the airport for early flights or near the Attariya road for early drives to Khaptad.
Tips from our trip managers
- Use Dhangadhi as a night stop before the long drive north to Khaptad or Ramaroshan.
- Try a Tharu thali with fish curry and dhikri at a local restaurant.
- Avoid the April–June heat for sightseeing; keep outdoor plans to early morning.
- Indian nationals crossing at Gauriphanta should carry a passport or voter ID.
- Expect fog delays on morning flights from late December to January.
