Private car or taxi 40 min–1 h
A taxi from Thamel to the Bhaktapur entry gate costs around NPR 1,200 to 1,800 one way, and a car with driver for a half day roughly NPR 3,500 to 4,500; check current rates. The drive follows the Araniko Highway past Koteshwor and Thimi. Cars stop outside the old town, which is largely pedestrian, and you walk in through the ticket gates to Durbar Square.
Local bus 1–1.5 h
Buses for Bhaktapur leave from Kathmandu's Ratna Park and Old Bus Park areas and stop at Kamal Binayak or the Bhaktapur bus park near Siddha Pokhari, a 10 minute walk from Durbar Square. Fares are around NPR 40 to 60. It is cheap and frequent, though crowded at rush hour. Keep small notes for the conductor.
Bicycle 1.5 h
Confident cyclists can ride the 13 km on a rented bicycle or e-bike, using the quieter roads through Thimi rather than the main highway where possible. The ride is mostly flat across the valley floor, rising slightly into Bhaktapur. Traffic and dust are heavy near Koteshwor, so start early, wear a mask and helmet, and leave the bike at a guarded stand outside the old town.

Questions travellers ask
How far is Bhaktapur from Kathmandu?
Bhaktapur is about 13 km east of central Kathmandu. By taxi or private car it takes 40 minutes to an hour depending on traffic, and by local bus about 1 to 1.5 hours. Tribhuvan International Airport is on the way, around 8 km from Bhaktapur, so some travellers visit straight from an arriving flight.
How much is the Bhaktapur entry fee for Indians?
Indian nationals pay the SAARC rate, around NPR 500, while other foreign nationals pay about NPR 1,800 to enter Bhaktapur's heritage area. Nepali citizens enter free. Carry your passport or voter ID to show at the gate, and keep the ticket while inside. Fees change, so check current status before you travel.
Is half a day enough for Bhaktapur?
Half a day covers Durbar Square, Taumadhi Square with the Nyatapola temple, Pottery Square and Dattatreya Square at a steady pace. A full day or an overnight lets you add a pottery class, a juju dhau tasting and quieter lanes after the day visitors leave. Combining Bhaktapur with Changunarayan or Nagarkot makes a good full day.
Can I go from Bhaktapur to Nagarkot the same day?
Yes. Nagarkot is about 19 km beyond Bhaktapur, roughly 45 minutes to 1 hour uphill by car. Many of our itineraries spend the morning or afternoon in Bhaktapur and drive on to Nagarkot for sunset and an overnight, then return to Kathmandu after sunrise the next day.
