Flight 35 min + 40 min transfer
Buddha Air, Yeti Airlines and Shree Airlines fly from Gautam Buddha International Airport in Bhairahawa to Kathmandu in about 35 minutes, usually several times a day. Drive 30–40 minutes from Lumbini to the airport and arrive an hour before departure. Indian nationals pay a rupee fare; other foreign nationals pay a higher dollar fare. Morning fog in December and January can cause delays, so check current status before you travel.
Private car 8–10 h
A private car follows the road via Bhairahawa, Butwal and the East-West Highway to Narayanghat, then the Prithvi Highway past Mugling and up the Trishuli valley into Kathmandu, about 300 km. Road widening on the Narayanghat–Mugling section and heavy truck traffic can add hours. Leave by 7 am, stop for lunch at Narayanghat or Kurintar, and expect to reach Kathmandu in the early evening.
Tourist bus 9–11 h
Tourist and deluxe buses run daily from Bhairahawa, and some from Lumbini Bazaar, to Kathmandu, mostly in the morning, with night buses also available. Seats are reserved and buses stop for meals. They are much cheaper than a private car but slower and less flexible, and night buses on this route are tiring. Book a day ahead through your hotel.
Road via Chitwan 2 days
Many travellers split the journey with one or two nights in Chitwan. Lumbini to Sauraha is about 180 km and five hours; Sauraha to Kathmandu is another 160 km and 5–6 hours. This turns a long transfer into a wildlife stop with a jeep safari and canoe ride, and the driving days stay under six hours.
Stops on the way
- Butwal (Jit Gadhi fort, lunch)
- Ramagrama stupa (short detour near Parasi)
- Chitwan National Park (Sauraha)
- Narayanghat (Narayani river)
- Manakamana cable car at Kurintar
- Mugling (river confluence)
If you have only a week in Nepal, fly this leg and use the saved day for Pokhara or Chitwan.
Questions travellers ask
How long does it take from Lumbini to Kathmandu by road?
Usually 8–10 hours by private car for the 300 km via Butwal, Narayanghat and Mugling, and 9–11 hours by tourist bus. Highway widening and truck traffic can add more, especially between Narayanghat and Mugling. Check current status before you travel, and start early to arrive in daylight.
Is there a flight from Lumbini to Kathmandu?
Lumbini has no airport of its own, but Gautam Buddha International Airport in Bhairahawa, about 20 km away, has several daily flights to Kathmandu by Buddha Air, Yeti Airlines and Shree Airlines. The flight takes about 35 minutes. Add 30–40 minutes for the drive from Lumbini to the airport.
What is the cheapest way from Lumbini to Kathmandu?
The cheapest way is a tourist or local bus from Bhairahawa or Lumbini Bazaar, costing a fraction of a flight or private car. Expect 9–11 hours with meal stops. Night buses save a hotel night but are tiring and less safe on winding sections, so we recommend day buses.
Can I stop in Chitwan between Lumbini and Kathmandu?
Yes, and we recommend it if you have time. Chitwan's Sauraha is about five hours from Lumbini and 5–6 hours from Kathmandu, so a night or two there splits the journey neatly and adds a jeep safari, a canoe ride and a Tharu cultural evening.
