This is our most efficient way to add Lumbini to a classic Nepal holiday. Instead of the long road journeys most tours use, you fly from Kathmandu to Bhairahawa on arrival day and spend two nights at the Buddha's birthplace. The drive north to Pokhara follows the Siddhartha Highway through the hills, with lunch in the old town of Tansen. After two nights by Phewa Lake, a 25-minute flight returns you to Kathmandu for two days of sightseeing.
It works for first-time visitors from any country who want a balanced trip of pilgrimage, mountain scenery and culture in a week. Indian travellers can do the same route and pay rupee fares on the domestic flights. The package suits couples and families equally, with optional upgrades to 4- or 5-star hotels in Pokhara and Kathmandu.

Day by day
-
DAY1
Arrive Kathmandu, fly on to Lumbini
Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport, where our representative meets you and helps you transfer to the domestic terminal for an afternoon flight to Bhairahawa. If your international flight lands after about 2 pm, we arrange a Kathmandu night instead and fly the next morning. In Bhairahawa, our driver takes you to your hotel near the Sacred Garden for dinner and a quiet first night on the warm Terai plain.
-
DAY2
Lumbini at dawn and the monasteries
Enter the Sacred Garden at opening time to see the Maya Devi Temple and marker stone, Ashoka's 249 BCE pillar and the Puskarini pond. After breakfast and rest through the midday heat, cycle the monastic zone with your guide: Theravada monasteries of Thailand, Myanmar and Sri Lanka on the east side, and the Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese and German temples on the west. End at the World Peace Pagoda for sunset.
-
DAY3
Drive to Pokhara via Tansen
Leave Lumbini after breakfast and drive through Butwal into the Tinau gorge on the Siddhartha Highway. Climb to Tansen, about 1,350 m, for lunch and a short walk past Tansen Durbar's Baggi Dhoka gate and the Newar houses of the old town. Continue north via Syangja and Waling, crossing ridges with views of terraced valleys, and reach Pokhara by late afternoon. Evening walk along Lakeside.
-
DAY4
Sarangkot sunrise and Phewa Lake
Drive to Sarangkot before dawn for sunrise over Machhapuchhre, the Annapurna range and Dhaulagiri from about 1,600 m. After breakfast, visit Davis Falls and the Gupteshwor Mahadev cave. In the afternoon, take a boat across Phewa Lake to the Tal Barahi temple and walk up to the World Peace Pagoda on the ridge above the lake for views back over the town and mountains.
-
DAY5
Fly to Kathmandu, Patan in the afternoon
Take a morning flight to Kathmandu; on clear days the Himalaya runs along the left side of the aircraft. Check in at your hotel, then visit Patan Durbar Square in the afternoon with a licensed guide. Its temples, palace courtyards and the Patan Museum hold some of the finest Newar metal and wood craftsmanship in the valley. Walk the lanes to the Golden Temple, a Buddhist monastery courtyard, before returning to the hotel.
-
DAY6
Kathmandu stupas and temples
Climb to Swayambhunath at the start of the day, when pilgrims circle the stupa and butter lamps burn in the shrines. Continue to Pashupatinath on the Bagmati, Nepal's holiest Hindu temple, and then Boudhanath, the great white stupa ringed by Tibetan monasteries; stay for the evening kora when the crowd thickens. Farewell dinner at a Nepali restaurant with cultural performance (optional).
-
DAY7
Departure from Kathmandu
Free morning for shopping in Thamel or Asan bazaar, or a last walk to a nearby temple. Our driver transfers you to Tribhuvan International Airport about three hours before your international flight. If you are extending your stay, we can add Chitwan, Nagarkot or a mountain flight from here.

Questions about this trip
How do I travel from Lumbini to Pokhara?
By road, Lumbini to Pokhara is about 210 km via Butwal and the Siddhartha Highway, taking 7–8 hours with a lunch stop in Tansen. There is no direct flight; flying would mean connecting through Kathmandu. Tourist and local buses also run via Butwal, but a private car is far more comfortable.
Can I visit Lumbini, Pokhara and Kathmandu in one week?
Yes. This 6-night tour does exactly that, using a flight from Kathmandu to Bhairahawa on arrival, a scenic drive from Lumbini to Pokhara and a short flight back to Kathmandu. You get two nights in each place without any drive over eight hours.
What does this tour cost?
It starts at about ₹45,000 per person for Indian nationals or US$ 640 for other foreign nationals, twin sharing, including two domestic flights, 3-star hotels, breakfast and dinner, a private car and guides. The difference reflects domestic airfares, which are much lower for Indian nationals.
Why not drive from Kathmandu to Lumbini?
The road takes 8–10 hours each way via Mugling and Narayanghat, and widening works often add delays. A 35-minute flight saves a full day. If you enjoy road travel or are on a tighter budget, we can replace the first flight with a drive and add a night in Chitwan on the way.
Is this tour good for a honeymoon?
Yes. Couples like the calm of Lumbini, sunrise at Sarangkot, lake views in Pokhara and evenings around Boudhanath. We recommend upgrading Pokhara to a lakeside or hillside 4- or 5-star resort and can add a private boat on Phewa Lake or a candlelit dinner.
Which side of the plane gives mountain views on these flights?
Flying Kathmandu to Bhairahawa, sit on the right side for the Himalaya. Flying Pokhara to Kathmandu, sit on the left. Views are best on clear mornings from October to February. Small aircraft often have free seating, so check in early.
Do we need a guide in Pokhara?
Not necessarily. Pokhara is easy to explore, and our driver knows all the sights. We include guides in Lumbini, where the history matters, and in Kathmandu, where licensed guides are recommended at heritage sites. A Pokhara guide can be added on request.
Can we add Chitwan to this itinerary?
Yes. The easiest way is to add two nights in Chitwan after Pokhara, driving about five hours, then fly from Bharatpur to Kathmandu or drive five to six hours. Alternatively, see our Lumbini and Chitwan family tour, which links the two directly.
When is the best time for this tour?
October to April. October and November have the clearest views after the monsoon; December to February is cool and dry, with foggy mornings in Lumbini; March and April bring warmer days and rhododendrons. May is very hot in Lumbini, and June to September brings monsoon rain and cloud.
