Gokarna Forest Resort sits within a protected stretch of old woodland that once served as a royal hunting ground. Monkeys and spotted deer move through the trees, the 18-hole golf course runs along the forest, and the main buildings use Nepali brick and wood. Being on the edge of Kathmandu means you trade a little drive time for far more peace than any city-centre hotel can offer.
Boudhanath and Pashupatinath are each about 10 to 15 minutes by car, and the airport around 20 minutes outside rush hour. The Gokarneshwar Mahadev temple on the Bagmati is close by. We suggest Gokarna for families who want space for children after sightseeing, for golfers, and for our wellness and yoga trips, where an indoor pool, spa and forest walks support a slower pace. Thamel is 40 minutes or more away in traffic, so it is not the base for nightlife.

Questions travellers ask
How far is Gokarna Forest Resort from Thamel?
About 12 km, which takes 40 minutes to an hour depending on traffic. That distance is the trade-off for a quiet forest setting. Boudhanath and Pashupatinath are much closer, each around 10 to 15 minutes by car, and the airport about 20 minutes. If you want to spend evenings in Thamel, a central hotel suits you better.
Can non-golfers enjoy Gokarna Forest Resort?
Yes. Most guests do not play golf. The forest itself is the attraction, with spotted deer and monkeys around the grounds, along with an indoor pool, spa and space for children to move about. It is a good choice for the first or last night of a trip, or for a slower two-night stay between sightseeing days.
Is Gokarna Forest Resort good for families with kids?
It is one of the better family bases in Kathmandu because there is open space, wildlife to spot and a pool, which children appreciate after temple visits. Boudhanath is close enough for an evening kora. The drawback is distance from the old city squares, so plan a full day with a car for Kathmandu, Patan or Bhaktapur Durbar Squares.
