Hotel Shanker

A Rana-era palace in Lazimpat converted into a hotel, with a white neoclassical facade, gardens and an outdoor pool. It is about 1 km from Thamel and gives palace character at a lower rate than the city's top luxury hotels.

Hotel Shanker occupies a late 19th-century palace built during the Rana period, when Nepal's ruling families commissioned European-style mansions across Kathmandu. The pillared facade, high ceilings and front lawn still carry that history, while the guest rooms have been modernised over the years. It sits in Lazimpat, an embassy district just north of Thamel, so you can walk to Thamel's restaurants in about 15 minutes yet sleep away from its late-night noise.

We use Shanker as a mid-to-upper option in city breaks, family tours and temple circuits for guests who want more character than a standard 4-star without paying 5-star prices. The garden and outdoor pool help on warm April and September afternoons. Kathmandu Durbar Square is around 3 km away and the airport about 7 km, roughly 25 to 35 minutes by car.

Questions travellers ask

Is Hotel Shanker a real palace?

Yes. Hotel Shanker is a converted Rana-period palace from the late 19th century, built when Nepal's ruling Rana families commissioned European-style mansions in Kathmandu. The front facade, lawns and public rooms keep that palace look, while guest rooms have been modernised. It is one of the more affordable ways to stay in a heritage building in the city.

Can I walk from Hotel Shanker to Thamel?

Yes, Thamel is about 1 km away, a 10 to 15 minute walk along Lazimpat Road. The hotel is far enough to avoid Thamel's late-night noise yet close enough for an evening out. At night we suggest a short taxi ride back, which costs a few hundred rupees; agree the fare before you get in.

Is Hotel Shanker a 5-star hotel?

We class it as a premium heritage hotel rather than a full 5-star. You get palace architecture, gardens and a pool, with service and rooms that sit between a good 4-star and the city's top hotels. For a full 5-star experience we recommend Yak & Yeti, the Marriott or Dwarika's, at a higher package price.
