The path leaves Landruk through terraced fields and small farmsteads, dropping steadily on stone steps and dirt paths. In autumn you walk past rice being cut and threshed by hand, and in spring past freshly ploughed paddies. After about an hour you reach the Modi Khola at roughly 1,300 m, crossed by a long steel suspension bridge strung with prayer flags. The river runs grey with glacial silt from the Annapurna Sanctuary.
On the Ghandruk side the climb starts immediately. Stone staircases wind up between terraces and small houses, gaining about 650 m in 2–2.5 hours. There are a couple of tea stops on the way, and the view back to Landruk widens as you climb. In warm months start early, because this slope faces south-east and gets full sun by mid-morning. Most groups reach Ghandruk in time for lunch and a visit to the Gurung museum.
Mules and local porters use the route daily, carrying rice, gas cylinders and building materials. Give them space on narrow sections and always step to the uphill side when a mule train passes. The suspension bridge is sturdy and safe, but it sways when crowded; cross one group at a time. If heights unsettle you, look ahead at the far end rather than down at the water rushing about 30 m below.

Questions travellers ask
How long does it take to walk from Landruk to Ghandruk?
Allow 3–4 hours. The trail descends about 300 m from Landruk to the Modi Khola bridge in roughly an hour, then climbs about 650 m to Ghandruk in 2–2.5 hours. The reverse direction is a little easier, since the long climb becomes a descent.
Is the Modi Khola suspension bridge safe?
Yes. Steel suspension bridges on Annapurna trails are built and maintained to engineering standards and carry mules daily. The bridge does sway, so hold the side cable and cross in small groups. People nervous of heights usually find it easier when they keep their eyes on the far bank.
Can I visit Ghandruk as a day trip from Landruk?
It is possible but tiring: 3–4 hours each way with a big climb in both directions. Most guests prefer to move on to Ghandruk and sleep there. If you want to return to Landruk the same day, leave by 7 am and keep the Ghandruk visit to two hours.
