Old Manang lanes, chortens and the village gompa

A slow walk through the older part of Manang, past mani walls, chortens and prayer wheels to the village gompa, with a guide to explain how Manangi families live, trade and keep their Tibetan Buddhist traditions at 3,500 m.

  • 1.5–2 hours
  • Morning, Sep–Nov and Mar–May
  • Small donation at the gompa

Above the lodge-lined main lane, the older part of Manang is a maze of narrow alleys between stone houses with flat roofs and wooden balconies. Livestock are kept on the ground floor and families live above, with firewood and fodder stacked on the roofs for winter. Long walls of carved mani stones and rows of prayer wheels line the paths, and walking clockwise past them is the local custom. Doorways are low and lanes narrow, so move aside for mules and porters.

The village gompa, a Tibetan Buddhist temple, sits among the houses and holds statues, painted thangkas and butter lamps. It may be locked outside prayer times; your guide can usually find the keyholder. A small donation is appreciated. Remove shoes and hats inside, do not touch the statues, and ask before taking photographs, as some rooms and images are not to be photographed. Morning prayers, when they happen, are the best time to hear chanting and the deep sound of the long horns.

The walk is a good way to understand Manang beyond its lodges. Manangi families were long-distance traders, travelling to India and Southeast Asia under special trading rights, and many now run businesses in Kathmandu and abroad. In winter some houses are shut up and their owners move down. In autumn you may see barley being threshed, buckwheat drying or women spinning wool on the rooftops. Ask before stepping onto a roof or into a courtyard, as these are private family spaces.

Questions travellers ask

Can tourists visit the gompa in Manang?

Yes, visitors are welcome when it is open, and a small donation is customary. Remove your shoes and hat at the door, walk clockwise, do not point your feet at the altar and ask before taking photographs inside. If the door is locked, your guide or lodge owner can usually find the keyholder for you.

Who are the people of Manang?

Manang's long-standing residents are often called Manangi or Nyeshang people, with Tibetan Buddhist culture and a dialect of their own. They were known for centuries as traders and were granted special trading privileges by Nepal's rulers. Today many families live part of the year in Kathmandu or abroad, returning to Manang for the trekking season and festivals.

Is the village walk enough for a Manang rest day?

On its own it is a cultural activity rather than an acclimatisation hike, since it gains little height. We suggest pairing it with a short climb, such as the Gangapurna viewpoint or Praken Gompa, in the morning, then exploring the old village in the afternoon. That combination keeps you active without exhausting you.
