Before the unification of Nepal in the 18th century, Lamjung was one of a group of small hill kingdoms, and its rulers were closely linked to the Shah dynasty of neighbouring Gorkha that went on to unify the country. The old fortified palace, known as Lamjung Durbar, stood on the ridge at Gausahar above modern Besisahar. What stands today is largely rebuilt, but the site, temples and views explain why the kings chose this ridge.
From the town centre, a path and stretches of road climb steadily through farmland and small settlements to the ridge, a gain of several hundred metres in about 1.5–2 hours. Early morning is best, when the air is cool and the northern peaks, including Lamjung Himal, sometimes show above the valley haze. Local families come up for festivals and picnics, but on most days the site is quiet. Sunday mornings are quietest, before families arrive with picnic lunches.
The hike suits trekkers who arrive in Besisahar early or have a weather delay. It is also a gentle leg-stretcher after a long bus ride from Kathmandu. Ask your guide or hotel for the current path, since new roads have cut across parts of the old trail. Carry water and sun protection, as most of the route is exposed once you leave the town. Allow time to be back at the jeep stand by early afternoon if you are booked on the next morning's departure north.

Questions travellers ask
How long is the hike to Lamjung Durbar from Besisahar?
Allow about 1.5–2 hours up and 1–1.5 hours down, so 3–4 hours return with time at the top. The route is a mix of footpath and dirt road climbing steadily through farmland. Exact directions change as new roads are built, so ask your guide or hotel staff for the current path before you set off.
Is Lamjung Durbar worth visiting?
If you have a spare morning in Besisahar, yes. It gives context on Nepal's history of small hill kingdoms before unification and offers wide views of the Marsyangdi valley. It is not a grand monument: much is rebuilt and simple. Do not delay your circuit schedule for it, but it is a good use of a free half day.
Can I see the mountains from Besisahar?
From the town itself, views are limited by the surrounding ridges and frequent haze. From higher ground such as Gausahar, clear mornings in October to February can show Lamjung Himal and other snow peaks to the north. For close mountain views you need to head up the Marsyangdi valley towards Chame and Pisang.
