This is a good choice for those who like to walk rather than ride. After sunrise and tea at the tower we follow footpaths and farm tracks downhill from Shree Antu, losing roughly 800 m over 12 to 14 km. The route cuts the corners of the road through tea gardens, past cardamom plots in shady gullies and through small hamlets where children walk to school and farmers carry leaf to collection points.
Our guide picks the best paths for the season and keeps the vehicle in touch by phone, so anyone can climb in after an hour or two. There are tea stops on the way and views across the Mechi valley to the Darjeeling ridge for most of the morning. The descent is easy on fitness but steady on the knees, so walking poles help.
We finish in Fikkal for a late lunch, in time to drive on to Ilam or down to Kakarbhitta in the afternoon. The walk is not marked, so go with a local guide rather than alone.

Questions travellers ask
How difficult is the Antu Danda to Fikkal walk?
Easy to moderate. It is mostly downhill, about 800 m of descent over 12–14 km, on footpaths and farm tracks. Fitness matters less than good knees and shoes with grip.
Can we shorten the walk?
Yes. The car follows on the road and meets us at several points, so you can walk for one or two hours and drive the rest.
Do we need a guide?
We recommend one. Paths branch often through farms and are not signposted, and a local guide also makes conversations with villagers easier.
