This tour is about slowing down. Ilam's tea gardens are only three hours from the Kakarbhitta border, yet most visitors rush through in a day. We give it four nights. You start in Ilam Bazaar, where Nepal's first tea estate was planted in the 1860s, walk the slopes with a guide, taste spring and autumn teas, visit the sacred forest lake of Mai Pokhari and see how large cardamom is grown and smoke-dried in a farming village.
On day 3 we move up to Shree Antu for a homestay night a short walk from the 2,328 m Antu Danda view tower, so sunrise over the plains and Kanchenjunga needs no 4 a.m. drive. After a morning walk down through the tea villages, the last night is near Kanyam, whose open, rolling slopes are the most photographed in Nepal. Drives are short, the highest point is 2,328 m and the pace suits families, couples and seniors.

Questions about this trip
What is the cost of an Ilam tour package from Siliguri?
This 5-day tour starts from about ₹22,000 per person for four travellers sharing a car and two rooms, from the Kakarbhitta border. A couple pays about ₹31,000 each. Add about ₹2,500 per car for the Siliguri–border transfer.
Is the Ilam tour good for families with kids?
Yes. Drives are 1–3 hours, walks are short and gentle, and the highest point, Antu Danda, is only 2,328 m. Children enjoy the Kanyam slopes, Mai Pokhari and the farm visit. Bring warm clothes for the sunrise.
When is the best time for an Ilam tea garden tour?
October to April for clear skies and Kanchenjunga views; March to May for first-flush plucking and spring flowers. Avoid June to September, when the monsoon brings cloud, rain and leeches.
Can we see tea being made in Ilam?
Usually you can see at least part of the process at a small unit or tea house in the plucking season. The main estate factory opens to visitors only when management allows it, so we do not promise a factory tour.
Is a homestay night compulsory?
No. If you prefer a hotel, we can replace the Shree Antu homestay with a hotel in Fikkal and drive up for sunrise at about 4.30 a.m. The homestay saves the early drive and adds local character.
Can we add Pathibhara Devi to this tour?
Yes, by helicopter from Kanyam in good morning weather, about 30 minutes each way, as an add-on on day 4 or 5. By road, Pathibhara needs at least three extra nights via Phungling.
What should I pack for Ilam?
Comfortable walking shoes, a warm jacket for sunrise, a light rain jacket, sunscreen and a hat. From December to February nights can be close to freezing at Shree Antu, so add thermals.
Is vegetarian food easy to find?
Very easy. Hotels and homestays in Ilam serve vegetarian dal bhat, roti, vegetable curries and paneer. Let us know in advance about Jain or no onion and garlic requirements.
Can we drive our own car from India?
Indian private cars can enter at Kakarbhitta with a customs pass and daily fee, limited to 30 days per calendar year. The Mechi Highway is steep and winding, so we recommend our local driver. Check current status before you travel.
